Japanese YouTuber gets jail for assaulting wife
A Japanese court on Thursday sentenced a 44-year-old YouTube content creator to two years in prison for assaulting and confining his wife at their home after he found she had been posting defamatory comments on videos he had uploaded.
Short-staffed Lokpal in search of consultant
The government has invited applications for the post of consultant in anti-corruption ombudsman Lokpal to help it in its work, an official said Thursday. "The Lokpal is short-staffed and necessary manpower arrangement is being worked out by the government in consultation with the watchdog," he said. Applications have been invited from eligible retired officials (deputy secretary level/deputy registrar level) for filling up of the post of a consultant in the office of Lokpal, the official said. In April, Dilip Kumar, a 1995-batch IAS officer of Punjab cadre, was appointed as the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the office of Lokpal. Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose was sworn in as the chairperson of the anti-corruption ombudsman by President Ram Nath Kovind in March. Five more arrested in Congress candidate murder case
Five more persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in the murder of Congress candidate of Aska Assembly constituency in Ganjam district, police said Thursday. With this, as many as seven people have so far been arrested for their alleged involvement in the killing of Manoj Jena (46), Congress candidate from Aska Assembly constituency on May 22, a day before the counting of votes, police said. Anand Swain (24), Shankar Rout (18), Sibaram Behera (22), Kartika Nahak (26) were arrested from Laxmipur in Koraput district, while Sultan alias Sunil Kumar Nayak (34) was arrested from Balugaon railway station on Wednesday, Superintendent of Police, Berhmapur, Pinak Mishra said. Three motorcycles, two crude pistols, three rounds of live ammunition, two knives, 10 mobile phones and around Rs 3,500 cash have been seized from the accused, the SP said. SC to hear mining baron Janardhana Reddy's plea to travel to Ballari on Friday
The Supreme Court will hear on Friday a plea by former Karnataka minister and mining baron Gali Janardhana Reddy, who has sought permission to travel to Ballari in the state to visit his ailing father-in law. Reddy, who is accused in a multi-crore illegal mining case and is out on bail, moved the apex court on Thursday. A vacation bench headed by Justice Indira Banerjee agreed to hear his plea on Friday. The former minister said in his plea that his father-in law has developed a health condition and is presently admitted in the ICU of a hospital at Ballari in Karnataka. He sought the apex court's permission to visit Ballari as he has been barred by a judicial order from visiting his home district. Reddy was granted conditional bail by the apex court in January 2015 after spending more than three years in jail. Kentucky man convicted of leaking Singapore HIV patient data
A federal jury in Kentucky has convicted a man of leaking a database of HIV patients from the Singapore government. The Lexington Herald-Leader reports jurors returned the verdict Tuesday for Mikhy Farrera-Brochez of Winchester after a two-day trial in U.S. District Court in Lexington. Farrera-Brochez was convicted on two counts of sending threatening communications to the government of Singapore and its ministry of health and one count of possessing and transferring the identities of other people in interstate and foreign commerce with the intent to commit or in connection with a crime. Singapore's health ministry accused Farrera-Brochez of stealing and leaking a database of 14,200 people who were infected with HIV. The ministry says Farrera-Brochez worked in Singapore as a lecturer before he was deported last year. Sentencing is set for Sept. 27.
Pragya Thakur briefly hospitalised in Bhopal
Newly-elected Bhopal MP Pragya Singh Thakur, who had been directed to appear before a special court in Mumbai in the Malegaon blast case this week, was hospitalised for a stomach ailment and discharged early Thursday morning. She was hospitalised on Wednesday night and discharged early Thursday morning, her close aide Upma told PTI, adding that she would return to the hospital immediately after attending a programme here. On Monday, special NIA Judge V S Padalkar had rejected her application for exemption from appearance in the court this week, in which she had stated that she has to complete formalities relating to Parliament. NZ judge allows images of man charged in mosque shootings
A New Zealand judge has ruled that media outlets can now show the face of the man accused of killing 51 people at two Christchurch mosques. Previously, the courts ruled media could only publish images which pixelated the face of Brenton Harrison Tarrant, the 28-year-old Australian white supremacist accused of the March 15 mass shooting. But High Court Judge Cameron Mander on Thursday wrote that prosecutors had advised him there was no longer any need to suppress images of the man's face and he was lifting the order. Retired law professor Bill Hodge says the initial argument for suppression was likely made to ensure witnesses weren't tainted that they could identify the gunman from their own recollection and not from seeing a picture in a newspaper.
Prosecutors: Australian cardinal's convictions should stand
Australian prosecutors argued in court Thursday that child sex convictions against a Roman Catholic cardinal should not be overturned and said his accuser had been a compelling witness. Cardinal George Pell, 77, is the most senior Catholic to be convicted of child sex abuse and is appealing those guilty verdicts in the Victoria state Court of Appeal. He attended the hearing for a second day, wearing a cleric's collar and occasionally taking notes. Prosecutor Chris Boyce told the three appeal judges that the convictions, largely based on the testimony of a single accuser, should stand. "The complainant was a very compelling witness," Boyce said. "He was clearly not a liar. He was not a fantasist. He was a witness of truth." Labour contractor held for worker's killing
A labour contractor was Thursday arrested for allegedly hacking to death a 22-year-old worker in Palghar district of Maharashtra, police said. The accused, Pralhad Gavit (38), was arrested for killing Akash Manze on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, police said. According to police, Manze had taken Rs 30,000 from a brick kiln owner as advance amount for working at the latter's unit at Kalyan. "He and his wife were to work at the brick kiln. Manze had taken money from the owner in advance. However, none of them turned up for work," an official from Palghar rural police The couple's absence from work enraged Gavit. He caught Manze outside a wedding ceremony at Gourapur village in Wada taluka, and accosted him. After a heated exchange of words, Gavit attacked the victim with sharp weapons, in which he died, police said. An offence under IPC section 302 (murder) was registered against Gavit, police said.

Two people were held and cases against six have been registered in connection with different cases of alleged illegal slaughter of bovines in Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh.A total of eight bovines were rescued and a vehicle along with tools used for the alleged slaughter were recovered, the police said."Police were carrying out a drive to prevent the illegal slaughter of bovines in the wake of Eid. Man gets 22-yr-old daughter drugged, thrown into canal in UP
In an apparent case of killing, a 22-year-old woman was drugged and thrown into a canal here by her father and his accomplices in a village here, police said on Thursday. The incident took place in Parai village on Wednesday, they said. The victim's father, Virpal, and another person were arrested in this connection based on a complaint by 23-year-old man Arjun, who was in a relationship with the woman, Chapar police station in-charge H Singh said. During interrogation, Virpal admitted that he gave his daughter an intoxicant and had her thrown her into the canal for "tarnishing the family's name", Singh said. The body of the woman is yet to be recovered, he added.

Former civil aviation minister and NCP leader Praful Patel on Thursday requested for another date to depose before the ED in connection with a money-laundering probe related to the losses suffered by national carrier Air India as part of an alleged multi-crore-rupee aviation scam, hours ahead of his appearance before the agency.
