UP: Man wanted in murder, extortion cases killed in encounter with STF

In a major breakthrough, a person wanted in murder and extortion cases was killed in an encounter carried out by a team of Special Task Force (STF) late night on Thursday.The accused has been identified as Tauqir.Speaking to media persons, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Abhishek Singh, said: "Local police was on a look-out for Tauqir for over a year. Prosecutors insist Pell conviction 'unimpeachable' at appeal hearing

Prosecutors insisted the conviction of Australian Cardinal George Pell for child sexual abuse was "unimpeachable" as his appeal against the guilty verdict went into a second day in Melbourne on Thursday. Man charged with elder abuse of Stan Lee pleads not guilty

A former business manager to Stan Lee pleaded not guilty to elder abuse charges that allege he stole from the late Marvel Comics legend and held him against his will. Keya Morgan, 43, entered the plea in Los Angeles after authorities transported him from Arizona, where he was arrested last month. Morgan was charged in May with five counts of elder abuse involving the late Marvel Comics mastermind including theft, embezzlement, forgery or fraud against an elder adult, and false imprisonment of an elder adult. The charges date to June 2018, when Morgan was working closely with Lee. The comics legend, who co-created Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk and Black Panther, died in November at age 95. TMC worker killed in Cooch Behar, party leader blames BJP

A TMC worker identified as Ajijar Rahaman was killed in Cooch Behar on Wednesday, making it the second such incident in the state this week.Following the death of Rahaman, a local TMC leader accused a BJP leader of being complacent to the crime along with his other associates."Azhar Ali, a member of BJP and some other people beat up and killed Ajijar Rahaman," he said.BJP, however, refuted the charges and asserted that the murder took place due to a personal issue.Nisith Pramanik, BJP MP from Cooch Behar, said, "A personal issue was the cause of the incident, TMC is trying to politicise it. Delhi Police nabs interstate red sandalwood smuggler, 8 logs recovered

Crime Branch of Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested an interstate red sandalwood smuggler, Amit Verma, from Asola village and recovered eight logs of sandalwood from his possession.Police said the recovered wooden logs weighed around 571 kilograms.According to Delhi Police, the recovered material costs around Rs. 50 lakh (approximately) in the Indian Market and about Rs. 2 crores (approximately) in the international or Chinese market.The accused was nabbed based on secret information and identification of the recovered logs were done by a Wildlife Inspector. Forest Act was registered and the accused person was arrested.Following the arrest, Verma disclosed that he, along with his other associate, were smuggling the illegal red sandalwood from Karnataka with the help of one smuggler who is a resident of Karnataka.He also informed that the smuggled product is supplied to two Nepal nationals. Sikar: Muslim man fakes identity to marry Brahmin girl, detained

Sikar police has detained a couple from Mumbai after it was alleged that the man, a Muslim, pretended to be a Brahmin for marrying a Brahmin girl from the district.The couple, identified as Imran Bhati alias Kabir Sharma and Vijay Lakshmi, was detained from Mumbai's Nalasopara area on Tuesday.A case in this regard was registered at a Sikar police station on May 25.DSP Saurabh Tiwari said, "The arrest is made in connection with a much-discussed issue from Sikar where a Muslim man masqueraded as Brahmin and married a Brahmin girl. A case was registered under IPC section 277/19 and a team was formed to trace and apprehend the man and woman. Lied to by cop, accident victim lodges complaint after almost 10 months

Almost 10 months after an accident left him bedridden and a police officer allegedly dissuaded him from lodging a complaint against the driver of the car that hit him, 19-year-old Dhawal Sareen has finally managed to get an FIR registered. The accident took place on August 3, 2018, when the motorcycle that Sareen, a resident of Dilshad Garden, and his friend, Paras Sharma, were riding was hit by a car which had allegedly jumped the traffic signal, the police said. Kerala man arrested for trying to extort Rs 8 lakh from woman using her morphed photos, videos

A 26-year-old man was arrested from Kerala for allegedly blackmailing and trying to extort Rs 8 lakh from a woman using her morphed pictures and videos, police said Wednesday. The accused, Akhil Ajayan, had sent the woman's morphed pictures and videos to her father and relatives, and threatened to upload them on porn websites, a senior police officer said. According to a complaint lodged by the woman's father, Ajayan had befriended his daughter on Facebook and started blackmailing her after morphing her pictures, the officer said. Air hostess alleges rape by colleague, his friend in Mumbai, 1 held

A 25-year-old air hostess was allegedly gangraped by her colleague and his friend on Tuesday, police said.The accused 23-year-old Swapnil worked as a technical engineer in the same private airline carrier where the survivor works.The accused was arrested and presented in court today after which he was sent to police remand till June 10. Boy drowns in water-filled pit at construction site

A seven-year-old boy drowned after falling into a pit at a construction site in suburban Kandivali, police said. The incident took place Tuesday evening at Ganesh Nagar. Aditya Ranvijay Chouhan, the boy, fell into a pit at the site of a redevelopment project while walking on the road, a police officer said. The pit was filled with water. Onlookers pulled him out but he was declared dead on arrival at hospital. A case under IPC section 304-A (causing death by negligence) was registered against the firm which is carrying out the construction, the police officer said, adding that no arrest has been made yet.

Guj: Man sets himself, brother-in-law's wife on fire

A man set his brother-in-law's pregnant wife on fire and tried to immolate himself in Rajkot city of Gujarat Wednesday, police said. Unrequited love allegedly led Chetan Palan (40), the accused, to committ the heinous act, police said. Both Palan and the 25-year-old woman, who is pregnant, sustained serious injuries and were admitted to Rajkot Civil Hospital. A West Bengal native was arrested here on charges of smuggling red sandalwood and being found in possession of over 570 kg of fine quality fragrant timber worth Rs 2 crore, police said Wednesday. A resident of Darjeeling in West Bengal, 41-year-old Amit Verma was arrested from Asola village in South Delhi, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ram Naik.
