The CBI on Monday arrested its DSP Devender Kumar in connection with bribery allegations against its special Director Rakesh Asthana. Meat exporter Moin Qureshi, who is facing multiple cases of money laundering and corruption, had paid bribe to get a case against him settled, the agency said.
A POCSO court here Monday awarded life imprisonment to a man for raping an 18-year-old girl at knife-point in suburban Kurla. Special Judge M A Baraliya convicted the accused, Tushar Bangera (26). As per the case details, the victim had joined a dance academy in Kurla in June 2012, where she came in touch with the accused who was also a student there. The two entered into a relationship but the victim called it off due to Bagnera's drinking and smoking habits. On July 7, 2013, the accused called the victim to the dance centre near the Phoenix Mall in Kurla on the pretext of rehearsing for a dance event. There he raped the victim and even took nude pictures of her.

A special court Monday sentenced an assistant charity commissioner to three years in jail for taking a bribe of Rs 5 lakh to pass a favourable order over a disputed piece of land. Ani lHimmatrao Shingne (55) was found guilty under the Prevention of Corruption Act and sentenced to three years in jail and a fine of Rs 1,000 was imposed on him by special judge (Anti-Corruption Bureau) S J Biyani. Shingne was posted as assistant charity commissioner, Pune between 2006 to 2009, during which time he demanded a bribe from the complaint in return for protecting 11 acres of her land at Maval. He demanded a bribe of Rs 5 crore from the complainant which was later brought down to Rs 50 lakh. The complainant approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau which laid a trap and caught Shingne while accepting the first instalment of Rs 5 lakh. A case was registered against Shingne on December 30, 2010.

The Tripura Police has registered a case against a man for his alleged obscene social media post against Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, a senior police officer said Monday. Superintendent of Police, West Tripura district, Ajit Pratap Singh said that an obscene cartoon depicting the chief minister was posted on Facebook. "One Rajiv De uploaded an indecent and obscene post on Facebook against Chief Minister. Later it was removed from that account but we have suo moto registered a complaint against him and investigation is on," the SP said, adding that no one had been arrested yet.
A retired Army personnel was shot dead by two unidentified gunmen in his residence at Khatowal Gaon, in Assam's Nagaon district Monday, police said. The two gunmen came in motorcycle to the residence of Dipen Nath in Khatowal Gaon area at around 7 pm and shot him dead from point blank range and fled away, they said. The feud between CBI Director Alok Verma and his deputy Rakesh Asthana turned murkier with the arrest of Devender Kumar, a deputy superintendent of police in the special investigation team headed by Asthana. The Central Bureau of Investigation Monday told a special court that it has sought sanction from Gujarat government for the prosecution of retired police officers D G Vanzara and N K Amin in the Ishrat Jahan alleged fake encounter case and was awaiting its reply. The CBI told the court of special judge J K Pandya that the central agency has sought sanction to prosecute the two officers under Section 197 of the CrPC. The CBI sought a month's time to get back to the court on the matter, after which the matter was posted for next hearing on November 22. While rejecting the discharge applications of the two former police officers, the special court had in August asked CBI to apprise it if the state had given sanction to prosecute the two officers. Former Gujarat DIG Vanzara had sought discharge on the ground of parity with former Gujarat in-charge DGP P P Pandey. Two Paytm employees, including a woman, were among three persons arrested on Monday for allegedly trying to extort Rs 20 crore from the e-wallet giant's founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma after threatening to leak stolen personal data and information, Noida Police said here. The arrested woman, who allegedly masterminded the extortion bid, is the secretary of Sharma and the trio had threatened to leak the data and misuse the information to cause the firm loss and dent its public image, officials said. The three employees of the Noida-headquartered e-commerce and wallet firm were arrested late Monday afternoon by a team from the Sector 20 police station, while their fourth accomplice is still at large, a senior official said. According to the police, those arrested are Sharma's woman secretary (identity withheld), her husband Roopak Jain and another Paytm employee Devnedra Kumar. A man has been booked for allegedly posting a morphed picture of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on a Whatsapp group on October 19, police said Monday. Raoji Bazaar police station in charge Santosh Singh Yadav said that the accused has been identified as Lucky Verma and he was the administrator of the Whatsapp group. He said that a case under IPC section 505 (2) (to disseminate information that creates hatred among various sections) and section 67 (dissemination of obscene material) of Information Technology Act was registered Sunday. A gang of auto-lifters has been busted and 15 stolen two-wheelers have been recovered with the arrest of a person from the Mohanganj area here, police said Monday. Acting on a tip-off, police detained the accused, Ashok Kumar, from the Mohanganj police station area, Amethi Superintendent of Police (SP) Anurag Arya said. During interrogation, Kumar confessed to his involvement in stealing the two-wheelers from various places, including Lucknow, following which he was arrested, Arya said. Some fake registration papers were also found in his possession, he added. The SP said that the police team behind the arrest was given a cash award of Rs 10,000.
A 18-year-old woman died after being hit by a truck in the district Monday, police said. Pratima Tiwari sustained severe injuries after she was hit by a speeding truck near the Munshiganj market area here on the Banda-Tanda National Highway when she was headed for her college, SHO of Munshiganj police station Santosh Singh said. She was rushed to the nearby Sanjay Gandhi hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead, he said. The driver was taken into custody and the truck seized, Singh added.
A Delhi court rapped the CBI on Monday for seeking adjournment to procure sanctions to prosecute an accused in a case against journalist Upendra Rai, who was arrested by the agency for his alleged involvement in dubious financial transactions. The woman who was raped allegedly by a relative and was tortured inhumanly with an iron rod inserted in her private parts has been operated upon in a government hospital here and is in a serious condition, hospital sources said Monday. Doctors operated on her at the sadar hospital here on Sunday night and the woman is in the intensive care unit, the sources said. She is being administered blood as she had been bleeding profusely. "She is a serious condition but is stable," doctors treating her said. Meanwhile, the accused relative and another person who allegedly helped him in the crime were produced before a local court on Monday and Judge H Bhattacharya granted the police request and remanded them to police custody for two days. The two had been detained by the police on Sunday and arrested in the evening after interrogating them. The Supreme Court on Monday asked media bodies, including the Press Council of India (PCI), as to why no prosecution proceedings were launched against media houses and journalists who disclosed the identity of victims of sexual assaults. A bench of justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta said that the offence of disclosing the identity of victims of sexual assaults has criminal liability, and if the law has been violated, action must be taken. "How many people have you punished?" the bench asked the counsel appearing for PCI. The PCI counsel said in cases related to disclosure of identity of such victims, the power of the Council was limited to censure such publication and they also send their orders to the Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP).
