Over 500 pending criminal cases against MPs and MLAs in the state were transferred to a special court, the Allahabad High Court said Monday, adding that the remaining ones would be transferred within 15 days for speedy disposal. A two-judge bench said out of an estimated 800-900 pending criminal cases against elected representatives in the state, more than 500 were transferred to a special court ( MP/MLA) formed for speedy disposal of criminal cases against legislators. Hopefully all such cases would be transferred to the special court within 15 days, it said. The Punjab Police on Monday arrested an alleged drug peddler in Amritsar and recovered four kilograms of heroin. Police Commissioner S S Srivastava said initially two kg of heroin was seized from the suspect when his car was intercepted at a police check post in the city. During the interrogation following his arrest, Zorawar Singh, a resident of Amritsar revealed that another two kilograms of heroin was kept in his house, he said. Zorawar Singh was deported from Canada and had recently started peddling drugs, he added.
Three youths were detained Monday for allegedly killing a 20-year-old man and injuring two others over an old enmity in Ulhasnagar township in Thane district Sunday, the police said. The accused trio, all in age group of 16-17 years, had allegedly attacked the three men Sunday night, an officer said. In the attack, one Vishal Mishra died while two others sustained injuries. A woman was attacked with acid by a man in upper Assam's Lakhimpur district on Monday after she rejected his marriage proposal, police said. The woman, a first year college student, was hospitalised with burn injuries on the left side of her face, chest and right arm. Another woman who was with the student at the time of the acid attack informed the police that the accused, along with an accomplice, came in a car and tried to drag the victim in it when she was returning from college at Pathalipahar area. When she resisted, he threw acid on her. The accused, a resident of nearby Borbali village, was arrested, police said. The victim and her family members alleged that the accused threw acid "to take revenge " on her and her family for rejecting his marriage proposal. Police said the victim was first taken to North Lakhimpur hospital from where she was referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.

Additional Sessions Judge Samar Vishal convicted Jarwal in a 2017 case for the offence punishable under 352 (assault or criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation) and 506(1)(criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code. The court will hear on October 22 the arguments on quantum of sentence where the politician can get a maximum of two years in jail. A bench of justices Kurian Joseph and S Abdul Nazeer issued notice to the police on Bajrangi's plea in which he has claimed that he was in "unsound physical condition", having permanent blindness and had undergone bypass surgery recently. Three persons, including a woman, were killed and ten others sustained serious injuries on Monday when a speeding truck ran over them in Dumka district, a police officer said. The victims, all residents of Kurma village in Banka district of neighbouring Bihar, were on their way to Babadham temple in Deoghar around 3am when they were mowed down by the truck on Deoghar-Godda Main road in Saraiyahat Police Station area, Inspector Anil Kumar said. All injured were taken to a nearby community health centre, where the doctors, following preliminary treatment, referred them to sadar hospital in Deoghar, he said. "One of the devotees was killed on spot and two others succumbed to their injuries during the course of treatment. Of the ten injured, the condition of four was stated to be critical," he said. The truck driver managed to escape with his vehicle following the incident, Kumar said, adding that a team of police officers are looking for him.
The Madras High Court Monday directed police to complete investigation and file a final report within three months in connection with a case filed against film director S A Chandrasekar for his alleged derogatory remarks against Hindus and their beliefs. Meanwhile, Principal Sessions Judge Subhadevi granted anticipatory bail to Chandrasekar, the father of popular Tamil actor Vijay, in the case. The case was registered against him after Hindu Makkal Munnani activist V G Narayanan lodged a complaint that Chandrasekar had made derogatory statements about Hindus and their beliefs during a speech in November last year. The CBI has filed a charge sheet against two of its officers for allegedly diluting a corruption case against a businessman, officials said Monday. Neeraj Raja Kochar, the owner of Viraj Profiles, and Rakesh Tiwari, a caterer at the Palika Service Officers' Institute in Chanakyapuri, were also charge sheeted in the case, they said. The case pertains to allegations that Tiwari took help of the two officers -- Rohit Srivastava, Additional Superintendent of Police, CBI and Rabinder Pradhan, a former CBI inspector who's now back to his parent cadre BSF, to "dilute" an ongoing CBI probe against Kochar, they said. "An investigation has established Tiwari, Kochar and the two officers were part of a criminal conspiracy. Pakistan's Supreme Court Monday reserved its judgement on the final appeal against the execution of Asia Bibi, a Christian woman sentenced to death in a blasphemy case. Asia Bibi was accused of committing blasphemy in 2009 and was convicted in 2010. Her appeal against the death sentence was rejected by the Lahore High Court. She had filed the final appeal to the apex court against the original conviction. A special three-member bench of the Supreme Court comprising Chief Justice Saqib Nisar, Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and Justice Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel reserved the verdict on the appeal of mother of five against the execution. Chief Justice Nisar cautioned the media against commenting on or discussing the case until the detailed judgement has been issued. Police have arrested all the nine accused, including three women, named in the FIR in connection with beating up of minor girl students of a state-run school here, a senior police official said Monday. Thirty minor girl students in Bihar's Supaul district were beaten up by a mob after they protested against lewd comments on a wall allegedly written by boys of a neighbouring school. A 16-year-old son of a Nagpur-based industrialist was rescued from his kidnappers by officials of Madhya Pradesh crime branch from Rajgarh district of the state, the police said Monday. The Supreme Court Monday asked the Centre to file its reply on a plea alleging that WhatsApp does not comply with the Indian laws, including the provision for appointing a grievance officer. A bench of Justices R F Nariman and Navin Sinha granted time to the Centre to file the reply after Additional Solicitor General Maninder Singh said that various issues have been raised in the petition and it needs time to file the response.
