The Supreme Court will hear a fresh PIL against the Rafale deal between India and France on Wednesday. A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph Monday said it will hear the PIL filed by lawyer Vineet Dhanda, who is seeking a direction to the Centre to reveal details of the deal and the comparative prices during the UPA and NDA rule in a sealed cover to the apex court. The petition also sought information about the contract given to Reliance by Dassault. Advocate M L Sharma's plea, filed earlier, alleging discrepancies in the fighter jet deal with France and seeking a stay on it will also come up for hearing on October 10. The Delhi High Court Monday allowed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file a closure report in the case of JNU student Najeeb Ahmed, who went missing from the university nearly two years ago. A bench of justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel "declined" the plea of the missing student's mother, Fatima Nafees, to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and monitor the probe, thereby removing the CBI from the investigation. The bench said Nafees, who had moved the high court in November 2016 seeking directions to the police to trace her son, "can raise all contentions available to her before the trial court" and disposed of the plea. The court had reserved its verdict in the case on September 4. The CBI, which had taken over the probe on May 16 last year, had after more than a year of investigation said it had looked into all the aspects of the case and was of the opinion that no offence was committed against the missing student. A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking review of the Constitution bench judgement which lifted the ban on entry of women into the Sabarimala Temple in Kerala. The plea, filed by Shylaja Vijayan, president of National Ayyappa Devotees Association, said the September 28 judgment which had allowed entry of women of all ages in the hill-top shrine is "absolutely untenable and irrational, if not perverse". A five-judge constitution bench headed by then Chief Justice Dipak Misra, had in its 4:1 verdict, said that banning the entry of women into the shrine is gender discrimination and that the practice violates rights of Hindu women.
A couple was injured in an acid attack on the Pilibhit highway here, police said Monday. The incident took place Sunday when Jagdish (42) was returning home in the Izzatnagar area of the city with his wife, the police said, adding that Jagdish's friend Kuldeep and another person allegedly threw acid on the couple. Jagdish and his wife were rushed to the hospital, where the condition of both was stated to be stable. Superintendent of Police (SP) Muniraj said the accused were allegedly pressuring Jagdish's wife for having illicit relations with them, adding that a hunt was launched for the two men.

Three men were booked for allegedly sexually assaulting a 26-year-old woman here in the district, police said Monday. According to a police complaint lodged by the woman, she was sexually assaulted and beaten up by Dev Anand, Rahul and Manoj Kumar at Laker Sanga village under the Kotwali police station limits on Sunday. On the basis of the complaint, a case was registered against three accused who were absconding, Station House Officer (SHO), Kotwali police station, Anil Kapervan said, adding that the woman was sent for a medical examination.
The body of a 40-year-old farmer, with its throat slit, was found in the district, police said Monday. The body of Saleem was found near Sindhawli village under the Mansurpur police station limits on Sunday evening, Circle Officer (CO) Rajiv Kumar Singh said, adding that the hands of the deceased were found tied. Saleem, a farmer, had gone to irrigate his fields on Sunday evening, Singh said. A case was registered in connection with the incident and a probe launched, the police said.
A case was registered on Sunday following a complaint alleging that nearly 100 stray dogs were poised in Ghatkesar town of Hyderabad metropolitan area.The complaint was filed by an activist, informed Circle Inspector of Ghatkesar police station."We have received a complaint from an Animal Activist stating about 100 street dogs have been poisoned near Infosys by local community persons. We have been to the spot but have not found any dog dead bodies. We are investigating the matter. A 39-year-old woman was arrested Sunday for allegedly killing her 75-year-old blind aunt in their flat in Thane's Khopat area, the police said. According to police, the accused Sapna Kulkarni allegedly attacked Shobha Kulkarni in a fit of rage Saturday when the latter didn't respond to her demand to make breakfast. Police said Shobha was stabbed at least 15 times. A case of murder has been registered. Further investigation is underway.
Two Uttar Pradesh police constables- Shadab and Keshav Pandey have been suspended for allegedly supporting cop, accused of killing Apple executive Vivek Tiwari.Around 13 police constables including- Shadab and Keshav Pandey had demonstrated in the favour of the accused cop at Ghazipur's Zamania Police Station on Friday.Last month, Tiwari was allegedly shot dead by a patrolling constable for refusing to stop his car. An inspector and a constable were allegedly shot dead by "gangsters" in an SUV who opened fire on a police team chasing them in a private vehicle at Beswa village under Fatehpur police station in Sikar district, an official said Sunday. A massive manhunt was launched to catch the killers following which one of the suspects was detained and being interrogated, Inspector General of Police V K Singh told PTI. A man has been arrested in connection with seizure of drugs worth Rs 200 crore meant to be smuggled to Malaysia through courier service, a top excise department official said Sunday. Prasanth Kumar from Kannur district was arrested, a week after the Excise department seized 30 kg of ecstasy drug worth Rs 200 crore from a parcel during a search of a private courier company office here. Excise Commissioner Rishiraj Singh said investigation is on to nab Ali from Chennai, who is Kumar's accomplice. The psychoactive drug, methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), commonly known as ecstasy was seized following a tip off. In a bid to evade detection during scanning at airport, the drugs were kept in 64 packets and were covered with carbon papers. Officials said investigation revealed that couple of months ago the culprits had smuggled the drugs in similar fashion to Malaysia.
A 28-year-old man has been released on bail by a court here after he spent nearly three months in jail in connection with a Facebook post case where he allegedly defamed a former DGP of Bihar, his lawyer said on Sunday. Jitendra Kumar, who was arrested on July 11, was granted bail by Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Kumari Vijaya on Friday, his counsel Manish Shankar said. "My client was named by Aditya Kumar, the main accused in the case, against whom an FIR had been lodged at Kotwali police station in the city. A television journalist has been brutally murdered in Bulgaria's northern town of Ruse, prosecutors said Sunday, with the case drawing international condemnation. The body of 30-year-old Viktoria Marinova, identified by authorities only by her initials, was found on Saturday in a park, Ruse regional prosecutor Georgy Georgiev said. The death was caused by blows on the head and suffocation, he added. A 19-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly stabbing a tempo driver to death along with three others after the victim's vehicle brushed past a pet dog in Dwarka's Mohan Garden area, the police said. The dog belonged to one of the four accused, they said. The arrested accused was identified as Karan Arora, they added. The police said the incident, in which the deceased's elder brother was also injured, took place on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. Arora is a neighbour of main accused Ankit and Paras, who were brothers, and they were very close friends, a senior police officer said, adding Arora was to appear for his class 12 examination from open board of Delhi. Five labourers were injured on Sunday after the boundary wall of a vacant plot collapsed in Rohini's Alipur, police said. The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) received a call about the incident at 11.39 am and immediately three vehicles were rushed to the spot, a senior DFS officer said. The wall collapsed when the labourers were working on the premises after which they suffered injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital, a police officer said. The injured are in stable condition and have been discharged from the hospital, the officer added. A case has been registered against the contractor and the matter is being probed, police said.
