The Odisha Police has arrested a man who fled from the state after raping a minor girl and killing her mother in Jajpur district last month, police said Monday. The accused, identified as Bijaya Behera (22), a resident of local Kumari village under the jurisdiction of Dharmasala police station area in Jajpur district, was nabbed by police team in Kerala on Sunday night, said Saroj Kumar Sahoo, inspector-in-charge of Dharmasala police station. "We were tracking the mobile phone of the accused regularly. We got information that the accused was in Kerala on Sunday. We immediately went Kerala by flight and arrested the accused near the aerodrome area on Sunday night," the IIC said. The justices said Monday they would not get involved in the case. The Texas-based American Freedom Defense Initiative in 2015 submitted an ad that depicted a sword-wielding Prophet saying: "You can't draw me!" A hunger strike by a Congress and a BJP MLA protesting the death of a tractor driver under mysterious circumstances in Rajasthan's Tonk district was called off Monday evening following the state government assured that their demands will be fulfilled. The two legislators were on hunger strike since Saturday. The driver was reportedly transporting gravel and bajri illegally last Tuesday night when police chased him in Laxmipura. Tonk Superintendent of Police Chunaram Jat claimed that the driver jumped from the moving tractor and died when the police tried to stop it. However, the driver's family members accused the police of beating him which led to his death. The body was kept at the dharna site in a freezer and nearly 250-300 people were present at the spot. Around half a dozen lawyers were booked for rioting and attempt to murder after they allegedly thrashed an on-duty police constable on the district court premises in Greater Noida on Monday, officials said. Constable Vipin Kumar from the Kasna police station had gone to the court in Surajpur for official work where an argument broke out between him and the lawyers, a police spokesperson said. He said the lawyers hurled abuses at the policeman, tore his uniform and assaulted him. "A complaint regarding the incident has been made at the Surajpur police station and an FIR has been lodged against the lawyers," the spokesperson said. The FIR names advocates Satish Kumar, Vijendra and Mukul, besides mentioning four-to-five unidentified lawyers, the official said. A 22-year-old man was allegedly killed Monday by a woman and her two aides over his relationship with her daughter in Yavatmal district of Maharashtra, police said. While two accused have been arrested another is on the run. The deceased Aqeel Shbbir Khan was in relationship with the daughter of the 42-year-old woman, which she was disapproved of. Khan had called his lover to meet him in Dream Land area in the district, around 740 kms from here, around 1:30 am, when he was attacked by the accused trio, a police official said. During the fight, the woman allegedly stabbed Khan in stomach, following which he collapsed, he said. Some locals rushed Khan to hospital where he died of excessive blood loss, the official said. Three men, allegedly involved in more than 50 cases of robbery and snatching in west Delhi, have been arrested, police said Monday. The accused -- Rahul Kumar (30), Aakash (28) and Arjun (25) -- were nabbed on Saturday when their were riding a stolen motorcycle, they said. According to the police, the gang members used to assemble in the wee hours and roam on a motorcycle to pick their targets. They usually targeted morning walkers or people waiting at bus stops, the police said. To dodge the police, the gang used to frequently change the colour of the bikes used in the crimes. Four stolen motorcycles and three gold chains were recovered from them, a senior police officer said. They were involved in more than 50 cases of snatching and robbery in various parts of Delhi, they said.
Three men were arrested in Greater Noida for allegedly trying to kill their sister by attacking her with acid as they were opposed to her relationship with a man, police said Monday. The 22-year-old woman was found dumped on a roadside near Kot village in Dadri area on May 9 with severe burn injuries and a disfigured face, they said. According to officials, while two of the brothers were allegedly directly involved in the attack, the third has been arrested for supporting the conspiracy. The two bothers, with alleged direct involvement, were absconding since the attack last month and had a reward of Rs 25,000 each on their arrest. Three people, including a woman, were arrested here on the charge of smuggling cannabis from Chhattisgarh border and one quintal of the contraband was seized from their car, police said on Monday. During a routine checking, the car was intercepted near Sadik ki Puliya. Upon examining the vehicle, one quintal packed cannabis was seized. Three people were arrested while three others managed to flee, SP, City, Shlok Kumar said. Upon interrogation, main accused Noor Mohammad, a native of Bihar, confessed to have smuggled the cannabis from Chhattisgarh border, the police officer said, adding the three who fled were buyers.
Three separate FIRs have been lodged against a retired policeman, who had verified the documents and recorded the statement of Mohammad Sanaullah, a former Army officer, declared a "foreigner" and lodged in a detention centre in Assam, officials said on Monday. The complaints were filed against retired sub-inspector Chandramal Das of the Assam Border Police at the Boko police station by three persons, whose names appeared as witnesses in Sanaullah's statement, they said. Tension prevailed Monday at Goghat in Hooghly district, where four persons were injured following a clash between supporters of the BJP and the ruling Trinamool Congress, police said. Trouble began when the TMC supporters were felling trees, which the BJP workers objected to, resulting in a scuffle, they said. The injured were admitted to the district hospital. Dilip Yadav, TMC district president and chairman of the Uttarpara-Kotrang Municipality, alleged that BJP workers insulted the national flag by replacing it with the party's saffron flag. Driven by debt, a man allegedly killed his 12-year old son in a suspected family suicide pact here that was recorded by his daughter on a mobile phone, police said. The man, in his 40s, was arrested Sunday within hours of the incident in which his wife also ended her life as a video showing him hanging his son from a ceiling fan at their house surfaced. He along with his wife had decided to end life along with their 17 year-old daughter and the son following pressure by some neighbours to pay back debt, police said. A man who threw a 5-year-old boy from a third-floor balcony at the Mall of America in Minnesota has been sentenced to 19 years in prison. Emmanuel Aranda showed little emotion and said almost nothing as he was sentenced Monday in Minneapolis. The 24-year-old Minneapolis man pleaded guilty last month to attempted premeditated first-degree murder in the April 12 attack. Authorities say Aranda told investigators he went to the mall "looking for someone to kill." The child survived the attack but has required multiple surgeries for head trauma and broken bones. His parents, who have requested privacy, had impact statements read in court. The boy's father told Aranda ,"You chose to take your hate and your hurt out on my precious boy." Aranda's mother, Becky, said her son is mentally ill. She said he belongs in a mental hospital, not prison.
Punjab's acting police chief V K Bhawara Monday held a meeting with the five-member SIT, probing into the desecration of religious texts and police firing incidents in the state in 2015. The meeting was held in the wake of media reports suggesting rift among the SIT members over some contents of the chargesheet filed in a Faridkot court in the case of police firing at anti-desecration demonstrators at Kotkapura. A 26-year-old man was bludgeoned to death with a cement slab after he slapped a person for urinating near his house in south-east Delhi's Govind Puri area, police said Monday. Two labourers died Monday after a heap of soil fell on them at a construction site at Italva village in Navsari district of Gujarat, police said. Sunil Vasava (35) and Bhavsinh Vasava (34) were buried alive in the incident while another labourer was injured, a Navsari (rural) police station official said. The government is proposing a mechanism to ensure that songs and videos reach maximum number of people at an affordable price, which in case of dispute may be fixed by a quasi-judicial body Intellectual Property Appellate Board (IPAB). These changes are proposed in the Copyright (Amendment) Rules, 2019, the draft of which has been made public by the commerce and industry ministry for stake holders' views and comments till June 29. Once the changes are approved, it would become easier for websites, portals and music streaming firms to buy contents (songs and videos) and upload them. However, the move could hurt the commercial interest of content owners of songs and videos.
