Maha govt announces Rs 10,000 cr aid for rain-affected farmers

The Maharashtra government on Wednesday announced an assistance of Rs 10,000 crore for farmers whose crops were damaged due to heavy rains in the state. State Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, who holds charge of the finance department, and PWD Minister Ashok Chavan made the announcement jointly here in Mumbai. Agricultural crops on over 55 lakh hectares of land have been damaged due to the extremely heavy rainfall between June and October this year. To provide some assistance to farmers, the Maharashtra government has decided to give financial assistance of Rs 10,000 crore to the affected farmers, the government said in a statement. Farmers who have lost their crops due to extremely heavy rains will get compensated, it said. Irrespective of their land size, farmers will get a compensation for damage of crops on up to two hectares of land, the statement said. Maharashtra sees 2,294 Covid-19 cases, 1,823 recoveries, 28 fatalities

Maharashtra on Sunday reported 2,294 fresh coronavirus positive cases and 28 fatalities while 1,823 patients recovered, the state health department said. The new additions pushed the tally of infections to 65,77,872, the death toll to 1,39,542 and the number of recoveries to 64,01,287, leaving Maharashtra with 33,449 active cases as of Sunday, it said. With 1,40,847 new tests, the number of samples tested so far in Maharashtra went up to 6,01,98,174. Maharashtra's case recovery rate stands at 97.32 per cent and the fatality rate is 2.12 per cent, the department said. Mumbai city reported 445 new COVID-19 cases and six deaths, taking the tally of infections in the financial capital to 7,48,640 and the toll to 16,158. Mumbai division added 860 new cases and nine deaths, which raised the caseload to 16,86,337 and overall fatalities to 35,353, the department said. Scindia inaugurates Sindhudurg airport in Konkan region of Maharashtra

Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia virtually inaugurated on Saturday the newly constructed Sindhudurg airport in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, according to an official statement. The state's Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray graced the event virtually from the Sindhudurg airport as the guest of honour while Union Minister Narayan Rane was among the other dignitaries, said the statement. Alliance Air, which is the regional arm of Air India, operated the inaugural flight from the Sindhudurg airport for Mumbai under the government's regional connectivity scheme UDAN. The Sindhudurg airport has become the 14th such facility in the state. Covid-19: Thane district's caseload up by 270, fatality count by one

The coronavirus infection tally in Thane district of Maharashtra increased to 5,61,401 with the addition of 270 cases, while the death toll rose by one to 11,428, an official said on Saturday. These cases and fatality were reported on Friday, he said. The district's mortality rate currently stands at 2.03 per cent, the official added. In neighbouring Palghar district, the case count has gone up to 1,37,106, while the death toll is 3,278, another official said.
