Nashik TCS forced conversion case: Accused held, sent to police custody

Nida Khan, an absconding TCS employee accused in a case of alleged religious conversion and sexual harassment at the company's Nashik unit, was arrested in central Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar with police claiming that a local AIMIM corporator had provided her shelter. Following her arrest on Thursday, she was produced before the Nashik Road sessions court on Friday. The court remanded her in police custody till May 11. After her name figured in a First Information Report registered at Deolali Camp police station, Khan (27) had moved the sessions court last month seeking anticipatory bail, pleading innocence and citing her three months pregnancy. Rejecting the plea on May 2, the court had said there seemed to be a "systematic plan" of brainwashing the victim. Reacting to the development, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said it was clear that the AIMIM had a role to play in sheltering Nida Khan. "We will find out who was behind it. Maharashtra bypolls: Sunetra Pawar leads in Baramati; BJP ahead in Rahuri

Counting of votes for bypolls to the Baramati and Rahuri assembly seats in Maharashtra got underway on Monday morning. A voter turnout of 58.27 per cent was recorded in the Baramati assembly constituency, where Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar is contesting, while Rahuri registered a 56.20 per cent turnout, as per election officials. The counting of votes began at 8 am in both the assembly segments. The Baramati seat in Pune district fell vacant following the death of then Deputy CM and Nationalist Congress Party president Ajit Pawar in a plane crash on January 28, necessitating the bypoll. His wife Sunetra Pawar, who is contesting her first assembly election, is among the 23 candidates in the fray. She had appealed to voters during the campaign to support her as a tribute to her late husband. No major political party fielded a candidate against her, and she is expected to secure a comfortable victory given her family's hold over the constituency. The Rahuri assemb

Dharavi rehab: Upper-floor eligibility tied to ground-floor status, records

Eligibility for upper-floor residents under the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) is contingent in part on the status of ground-floor occupants, with affidavits accepted only if the lower unit qualifies, officials said. A government resolution dated October 4, 2024, extends benefits to upper-floor residents who can prove occupancy before a November 15, 2022, cut-off, offering 300 sq ft homes outside Dharavi but within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Beneficiaries can opt for a hire-purchase model, paying nominal rent for 25 years before ownership transfers, or choose early ownership by paying a pre-approved sum. Officials said the policy marks a departure from past slum rehabilitation schemes, which typically excluded upper-floor occupants. Eligibility is determined through a hierarchy of documents, including electricity bills, registered rent or purchase agreements, and government-issued IDs showing the upper-floor address prior to the cut-off date. Paneer or substitute?: Maharashtra govt mandates disclosure by restaurants

Restaurants and eateries across Maharashtra are now required to clearly inform customers whether the "paneer" served in dishes is genuine cottage cheese or a substitute, officials said on Friday. The state Food and Drug Administration's March 20 directive, which came into effect on Thursday, was issued to ensure transparency and prevent consumers from being misled by the use of cheaper non-dairy alternatives instead of paneer. As per the directive, all food businesses, including restaurants, hotels, caterers and fast-food outlets, must explicitly disclose the use of substitutes, commonly known as cheese analogues, on their menus, bills and display boards, an official said. Manufacturers and suppliers have also been directed to label such products accurately, he said, adding that action will be taken against violators under food safety laws. Paneer is a product made entirely from milk, while a cheese analogue is prepared using edible oils, starch and emulsifiers. Though such ...
