More than 34,000 Ganesh idols were immersed across Mumbai on the second day of the Ganesh festival on Thursday, civic officials said. While the festival goes on for ten days, many households bid adieu to the elephant-headed lord after one-and-a-half days. As of 9 pm, 34,122 idols including 33,962 household Ganapati idols and some community ('Sarvajanik') ones had been immersed in the city, said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in a release. A senior BMC official said that 13,294 household idols and 54 community ones were immersed in artificial ponds created specially for the purpose. The idols of 28 Hartalika were also immersed in artificial ponds, the official said. The civic body has set up 188 control rooms across the city for the festival and deputed 786 lifeguards at the beaches and other immersion points. Mumbai on Wednesday reported 638 new cases of COVID-19, taking the overall tally to 11,44,823, while four fresh deaths linked to the infection pushed up the toll to 19,698, said the city civic body. As many as 789 patients recovered from the infection during the day, taking their cumulative tally to 11,20,868 and leaving the metropolis with 4,257 active cases, said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in a bulletin. Property registrations in Mumbai municipal area this month rose 20 per cent to more than 8,100 units -- highest in 10 years for August -- but fell 28 per cent from July, according to Knight Frank. Mumbai city (BMC area) saw property sale registrations of 8,149 units in August 2022, contributing over Rs 620 crore to the state revenues, Knight Frank India said in a statement. In July, the registration of properties stood at 11,340 units. "August 2022 was the best in a decade for the month of August in a decade," it said. The consultant highlighted that 85 per cent of the properties registered in August 2022 were residential and 9 per cent commercial. "The largest share of home buyers in August 2022 is in the 31-45 years of age category having a contribution of 47 per cent of the total residential property registrations. All public liabilities and every devotee visiting the mandal is covered under the insurance, for the 10-day festivities beginning on Wednesday, said Vijay Kamath, chairman of the GSB Seva Mandal located at the Kings Circle in Mumbai. Of the new cases, only 40 are symptomatic, including six patients needing oxygen support, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official said. Mumbai on Tuesday reported 832 new coronavirus cases, up from nearly 600 registered a day ago, while two more patients succumbed to the infection in the city, the local civic body said. Fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim's jailed brother Iqbal Kaskar was admitted to the government-run J J Hospital in Mumbai after complaint of chest pain, an official said on Sunday. Kaskar was rushed to the hospital on Saturday from the Taloja jail in neighbouring Navi Mumbai and is undergoing treatment in the medical facility's cardiac department, the official said. The Enforcement Directorate had arrested Kaskar in February this year in connection with a money laundering case. The ED had taken him in custody from the Taloja jail where he was lodged in connection with multiple extortion cases registered against him. He had later been remanded in judicial custody.
