NY's appeals court declines to block Trump's sentencing in hush money case

New York's highest court declined to block Donald Trump's upcoming sentencing in his hush money case Thursday, leaving the US Supreme Court as the president-elect's likely last option to prevent the hearing from taking place Friday. One judge of the New York Court of Appeals issued a brief order declining to grant a hearing to Trump's legal team. Trump has asked the Supreme Court to call off Friday's sentencing in the hush money case. His lawyers turned to the nation's highest court on Wednesday after New York courts refused to postpone the sentencing by Judge Juan M Merchan, who presided over Trump's trial and conviction last May on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. Trump has denied wrongdoing.

New York to charge fossil fuel firms for damage from climate change

Large fossil fuel companies would have to pay fees to help New York fight the effects of climate change under a bill signed by Governor Kathy Hochul. The new law requires companies responsible for substantial greenhouse gas emissions to pay into a state fund for infrastructure projects meant to repair or avoid future damage from climate change. Lawmakers approved the bill, signed on Thursday, earlier this year to force big oil and gas companies to contribute to the cost of repairs after extreme weather events and resiliency projects such as coastal wetland restoration and upgrades to roads, bridges and water drainage systems. The Climate Change Superfund Act is now law, and New York has fired a shot that will be heard round the world: the companies most responsible for the climate crisis will be held accountable," said state Senator Liz Krueger, a Democrat who sponsored the bill. The planet's largest climate polluters bear a unique responsibility for creating the climate crisis, a

Trump rings NYSE opening bell, marks 2nd time as Time's Person of the Year

President-elect Donald Trump rang the opening bell Thursday at the New York Stock Exchange after being recognised for the second time by Time magazine as its person of the year. The honours for the businessman-turned-politician are a measure of Trump's remarkable comeback from an ostracised former president who refused to accept his election loss four years ago to a president-elect who won the White House decisively in November. Before he rang the opening bell at 9.30 am, a first for him, Trump spoke at the exchange and called it a tremendous honour. Time Magazine, getting this honour for the second time, I think I like it better this time actually, he said. Trump, accompanied by his wife, Melania Trump, daughters Ivanka and Tiffany and Vice President-elect JD Vance, grinned as people chanted USA before he rang the bell. He then raised his fist. In his remarks, he talked up some of the people he has named to his incoming administration, including Treasury pick Scott Bessent, and s

Details emerge about suspect booked in killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO

The suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare's CEO likely was motivated by his anger with what he called parasitic health insurance companies and a disdain for corporate greed, a law enforcement bulletin obtained by The Associated Press said. Luigi Nicholas Mangione wrote that the US has the most expensive health care system in the world and that profits of major corporations continue to rise while our life expectancy does not, according to the bulletin, based on a review of his hand-written notes and social media posts. Prosecutors on Tuesday were beginning to take steps to bring the 26-year-old Ivy League graduate from a prominent Maryland real estate family back to New York to face a murder charge while new details emerged about his life and how he was captured. Mangione struggled with officers as he arrived at the Blair County Courthouse on Tuesday and shouted something partly unintelligible that referred to an insult to the intelligence of the American people. Suspect in UnitedHealthcare's CEO killing faces weapons, forgery charges

Police have arrested a 26-year-old man with a weapon consistent with the gun used to kill the head of the largest US health insurer, New York's police commissioner said Monday. The man was taken into custody after police got a tip that he had been spotted at a McDonald's in Pennsylvania, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference. They also recovered clothing, including a mask consistent with those worn by our wanted individual, Tisch said. Also recovered was a fraudulent New Jersey ID matching the ID our suspect used to check into his New York City hostel before the shooting incident." NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny identified the suspect as Luigi Nicholas Mangione, who was born and raised in Maryland, has ties to San Francisco and a last known address in Honolulu, Hawaii. Mangione had a ghost gun, a type of weapon that can be assembled at home from parts without a serial number, making them difficult to trace, investigators said. As of right now the informa

Search for UnitedHealthcare CEO's killer yields evidence, but few answers

They have seen him smiling on a hostel security camera, but don't know his name. They found the backpack he discarded while fleeing, but don't know where he's gone. As the search for UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson's killer goes on, investigators are reckoning with a tantalizing dichotomy: They have troves of evidence, but the shooter remains an enigma. Police don't know who he is, where he is, or why he did it though they are confident that it was a targeted attack instead of a random act. The net is tightening, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Saturday. Hours after he spoke, police divers were seen searching a pond in Central Park, where the killer fled after the shooting. Officers have been scouring the park for days for any possible clues and found his bag there Friday. Retracing the gunman's steps using surveillance video, police say, it appears he left the city by bus soon after the shooting Wednesday morning outside the New York Hilton Midtown. He was seen on video

Police find bag carried by gunman who killed UnitedHealthcare's CEO

The gunman who killed the CEO of the largest US health insurer likely left New York City on a bus soon after the brazen ambush that has shaken corporate America, police officials said Friday. But he left something behind: a backpack that was discovered in Central Park. Three days after the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, police still did not know the gunman's name or whereabouts or have a motive for the killing, Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told reporters. Investigators were looking at whether the shooter may have been a disgruntled employee or client of the insurer, he said. The FBI announced Friday night it was offering a USD 50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Video of the gunman fleeing Wednesday's shooting showed him riding a bicycle into Central Park and later taking a taxi to a bus terminal that offers commuter service to New Jersey and Greyhound routes to Philadelphia, Boston and Washington, DC, according to Kenny. NYC's mayor Eric Adams warms to Trump, doesn't rule out becoming Republican

New York City Mayor Eric Adams appears open to switching parties to become a Republican, as he declined to rule out a future change in political allegiances during a pair of interviews on Friday that came as he has increasing warmed to President-elect Donald Trump. The comments from Adams, the top Democrat in one of the country's most liberal cities, riled critics who have grown concerned over the mayor's increasing willingness to throw his support behind Trump and his hardline immigration policies. Adams, who faces federal corruption charges, was a registered Republican in the 1990s and early 2000s but has spent his political career as a Democrat. In a Friday morning interview with the local cable news station NY1, Adams was asked if he would consider a return to the GOP. The Democrat appeared to leave open the possibility of a switch. The party that's the most important for me is the American party, he said. I'm a part of the American party. I love this country. This is the home
