Afghan para-athlete wins historic first medal for Refugee Paralympic Team

Zakia Khudadadi made history at the Paris Paralympics by becoming the first athlete from the Refugee Paralympic Team to win a medal. Khudadadi won bronze in the women's 47kg category after defeating Turkey's Ekinci Nurcihan on Thursday. When the final buzzer sounded at the Grand Palais in central Paris, Khudadadi erupted in joy, throwing her helmet and mouthpiece into the air. It was a surreal moment, my heart started racing when I realized I had won the bronze, Khudadadi said, her voice shaking with emotion. I went through so much to get here. This medal is for all the women of Afghanistan and all the refugees of the world. I hope that one day there will be peace in my country. Khudadadi, who was born without one forearm, began practicing taekwondo in secret at age 11 in a hidden gym in her hometown of Herat, in western Afghanistan. Originally blocked from competing following the rise of the Taliban in 2021, she was later evacuated from Afghanistan and was allowed to compete at th

Pregnant para archer Jodie Grinham returns to action at 2024 Paralympics

Great Britain's Jodie Grinham returned to the Paralympic stage for the first time since Rio 2016, this time seven months pregnant. Grinham wrapped up her first competition this morning in the women's individual compound open. She finished fourth and scored a personal best of 693. Later in the evening she and Nathan MacQueen placed second in the mixed team compound open ranking round. I know I can do more, it's a personal best but there's lots of room for improvement, Grinham said. The key for me was finishing in that top four, and that gives me a day off competition to focus on tweaking things and making myself better. Grinham will return Saturday for the elimination round which allows her rest from competition Friday. After having a minor scare earlier in the week the rest is luxurious. On Monday she had taken a trip to the hospital as the baby had stopped moving. Her doctors assured her everything looked normal and the baby was healthy. She said her doctor knew there was no point

Paralympics 2024: Tanwar loses to Turkish opponent in taekwondo round of 16

India's Aruna Tanwar suffered a heavy 0-19 defeat to Nurcihan Ekinci of Turkey in a round of 16 contest in women's K 44-47kg category of the Paris Paralympics on Thursday. Aruna was absolutely no match to her opponent from Turkey who garnered points at will in the five-minute round. Ekinci scored two points from body kick nine times during the contest while the Indian also conceded one penalty point (gam-jeom). K44 category includes athletes who have impairments in one arm above the elbow. Para taekwondo was introduced during Tokyo Paralympics in 2021. Athletes will compete in five separate weight categories for each gender. In Para taekwondo, matches are held in a one round contest, lasting up to five minutes. One key difference with the able-bodied Olympic Games is that kicks to the head and punches are not allowed because not all athletes can block in the same way. Athletes wear protective equipment and 'sensor socks', which determines if a point is scored when hitting their

Paralympics: India eye record haul with largest ever contingent for Paris

Battered by life but not beaten by its many challenges, an 84-strong contingent of Indian para-athletes, the largest ever in the country's history and a heady mix of youth and experience, would be eyeing an unparalleled gold rush when the Paralympic Games begin here on Wednesday. India won a record 19 medals, including five gold, in the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021 for a 24th-place finish in the overall rankings. Three years on, the country's target is more than 25 medals with a double-digit haul in gold. What has fuelled this ambition is the size of the contingent and the exceptional performances in the past one year. India won a record 111 medals, including 29 gold, at the Hangzhou Asian Para Games last year. This was followed by unprecedented success at the World Para Athletics Championships in May where the country snared 17 medals, including half a dozen gold for a sixth-place finish in the overall standings. Several medal winners in Hangzhou are in this Paralympics team, includ

Swimmer Ali Truwit makes Paralympics after losing lower leg in shark attack

The first step for swimmer Ali Truwit was overcoming her newfound fear of the one place she had always felt safe the water. Because the sound of water, any sound involving water, instantly triggered flashbacks to the day she swam for her life after being bitten by a shark. She and a friend were snorkeling in the ocean off Turks and Caicos on May 24, 2023, when a shark charged and bit Truwit's lower left leg. Bleeding and with the shark circling, Truwit went into competitive swim mode and raced 75 yards toward the safety of the boat. Truwit was rushed to the hospital and airlifted to the United States, where she had three surgeries, including one to amputate her leg below the knee. To reclaim her love of the water, she went to the family's backyard pool. She waded up to her waist, fought off fear and took back control. The plunge not only started her path toward healing but to Paris for the Paralympics. "I love comeback stories," said the 24-year-old from Darien, Connecticut, who
