Parminder Dhindsa 'reluctant' candidate, will face drubbing: Mann

Sitting MP from Sangrur and AAP leader Bhagwant Mann Saturday took a swipe at SAD candidate for the seat, Parminder Singh Dhindsa, saying the former finance minister, who was "reluctant" to enter the poll fray, will "bite the dust". Mann claimed that with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) "facing public anger" over the handling of 2015 sacrilege and subsequent police firing incidents, Parminder's father and former Union minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa had rightly advised him not to contest coming Lok Sabha polls as he knew he would face a drubbing. The Akali Dal Friday announced to field Parminder Singh Dhindsa from Sangrur in the Lok Sabha elections. "He (Parminder) had initially said he did not want to fight Lok Sabha elections but if party asks then he would abide by it. If a person has jumped the poll fray half-heartedly, it means he knows that he is going to be defeated," said Mann, who had defeated Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls and is now seeking re-election from .

MGP supports Congress candidate in Mapusa assembly by-poll

The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), ruling BJP's estranged ally, Saturday declared support to the Congress candidate in the April 23 by-election to the Mapusa Assembly constituency in Goa. Local MGP leader Vinod Fadke said the party had decided to back Congress' Sudhir Kandolkar. The by-election became necessary after the death of BJP MLA Francis D'Souza. The BJP has fielded his son Joshua D'Souza in the by-poll. Fadke said as the MGP itself was not contesting the election, it decided to support Kandolkar, who is an "efficient and winnable" candidate. "We will work full-time for Kandolkar's victory," he added. When contacted, senior MGP leader Sudin Dhavalikar -- who was recently dropped from the BJP-led state cabinet -- said the party had left it to its Mapusa unit to decide whom it should support. Interestingly, MGP president Dipak Dhavalikar is contesting Shiroda Assembly by-election where he is pitted against Congress' Mahadev Naik and BJP's Subhash ...

'Settlers' may hold key to Renuka-Nageswara Rao fight in Khammam

Former union minister Renuka Chowdary of the Congress is locked in a straight fight with Nama Nageswara Rao of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in Khammam Lok Sabha constituency, where "settlers" in two assembly segments bordering neighbouring Andhra Pradesh could well hold the key to poll outcome. It is turning out to be a prestigious battle -- the Congress pinning lot of hopes here, while the TRS President and Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is determined to assert his party's supremacy here as it had a poor outing in the district in the 2018 assembly polls. The CPI-M and the BJP have also put up their candidates for the April 11 Lok Sabha elections in this segment, where the Congress has won 11 times since 1952 and others on the remaining four occasions. This is the third time that Rao, promoter of diversified Madhucon Group, and Chowdary are fighting against each other in Khammam. Chowdary won 2004 and Rao in 2009. Kalyan Singh, Rajiv Kumar must resign after EC indictment: Chidambaram

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram Saturday said Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh and Niti Aayog vice chairman Rajiv Kumar have no right to remain in office after their indictment by the Election Commission for poll code violation. The former finance minister's tweet demanding the resignations of Singh and Kumar came after the EC pointed to model code of conduct violations by the two. On Friday, the EC expressed "displeasure" over the NITI Aayog vice chairman's remarks against the Congress' proposed minimum income scheme 'NYAY'. Before that, the poll panel had on Monday concluded that Singh's remarks supporting the return of Narendra Modi as prime minister were violative of the model code. "Governor Kalyan Singh and Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar must resign immediately. After the indictment by the Election Commission, they have no right to remain in office," Chidambaram said on Twitter.

Modi govt lying on Balakot air strike, shooting down of Pak F-16: Farooq Abdullah

National Conference president Farooq Abdullah has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government of "lying" to the nation on the Balakot air strike and shooting down of a Pakistani F-16 in the aerial dogfight between the IAF and the PAF. Abdullah, who is contesting the Lok Sabha elections from the Srinagar constituency, said the BJP-led central government carried out the aerial strike as the Prime Minister had "failed" in delivering on his promises made during the last general elections in the country. "He (Modi) had promised that Rs 15 lakh will be put in your accounts, did you get Rs 15 lakh? When he failed in all these things, his head was hanging whenever I used to see him in Parliament during the last few days as he realised that his power is gone.
