Omar welcomes Cong's poll promise to amend AFSPA

National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah Tuesday welcomed the Congress party's promise to amend the Armed Forces Special Powers Act if voted to power in the general elections. "If the Congress has mentioned this in their manifesto, I welcome it. It is better late than never. If they had done this before 2014 (polls), we would have worked to lift ASFPA from certain parts of the state," said Omar Abdullah. The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said some friends from the Congress conspired against him when he wanted to lift the AFSPA from some parts of the state. "It is a very good thing. I wish they had done this when I was the chief minister of the state," he said. "That time when I demanded the removal of AFSPA, some Congress friends had conspired against it. I do not want to name them because it won't look good. There were some senior leaders from Kashmir who conspired against my efforts. I got support only from (former Union Minister P) Chidambaram, Omar said.

BJP declares two more Lok Sabha candidates in Gujarat

The BJP Tuesday declared two more candidates for the Lok Sabha elections in Gujarat, taking the total number of its nominees to 25 in the state. In its latest list, the ruling party dropped its current MP from Mehsana, but retained the sitting Lok Sabha member from Surat. With this,the BJP has declared candidates on 25 out of the 26 Lok Sabha seats in the state. The saffron outfit has dropped its sitting MPs on nine seats and renominated 16 Members of Parliament, who were elected in 2014. In Mehsana, the BJP has given ticket to Shardaben Patel, the wife of late BJP leader Anil Patel, replacing its sitting MP Jayshree Patel. Mehsana is a crucial seat for the BJP as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's birthplace Vadnagar is located in the district. India's Mission Shakti a terrible thing, says NASA chief

Indian Air Force, Army to destroy unexploded bombs by Pak: Sources

Indian Air Force and Army will destroy three to four unexploded bombs fired by the Pakistan Air Force in the Mendhar area along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, said a source.The Pakistani bombs were fired on February 27 and did not explode after being released from their Mirage-III combat planes.Pakistan also fired 11 H-4 and 5 AMRAAM missiles on Indian military targets on February 27.Pakistan attacked Indian troops in the area.

18 nominations in third phase Assam polls

Altogether 18 nominations were filed for the third and final phase of polls to four Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam till Tuesday, an election office spokesperson said. Seven candidates have filed for Dhubri, four for Kokrajhar (ST), two for Barpeta and five for Gauhati parliamentary constituencies. Qureshi urges US to play role in resumption of Indo-Pak dialogue

Pakistan on Tuesday urged the US to play its role in resumption of Indo-Pak dialogue to resolve all outstanding issues, amid tensions with India following the Pulwama terror attack and subsequent aerial strike by Indian jets on a training camp of the Jaish-e-Mohammed in Balakot. Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo spoke over telephone on Tuesday afternoon and exchanged views on the current situation in the region, the Foreign Office said.
