Singapore former govt stalwart seeks to form new party

A former stalwart of Singapore's long-ruling government and ex-presidential candidate said Friday he is seeking to form a new party ahead of elections expected as early as this year. Analysts said the move by Tan Cheng Bock, who almost beat the ruling party's de facto candidate in the 2011 presidential race, could represent a challenge to the government's dominance of the political system. The People's Action Party (PAP) has ruled the affluent city-state since 1959 and has a tight grip on power. The forthcoming election, which they are widely expected to win, must be held by 2021 -- but speculation is mounting it will be this year. Tan's move will heap extra pressure on the government, however, with the poll coming at a sensitive time as the country's founding Lee family prepares to hand over the premiership to a new generation of leaders. Announcing he had applied Wednesday to register the new group, called the "Progress Singapore Party", Tan said the move was out of a "sense of ...

Bharatiya Janata Party is not scared of any political alliance ahead of parliamentary elections, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma said. "BJP is capable of forming the government on its own. The opposition is day-dreaming," he said. His comments came days after Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati and Samajwadi Party's Akhilesh Yadav announced they would contest Lok Sabha polls, expected to be held in April-May, together in UP. The comments also came ahead of Saturday's rally of several anti-BJP parties being organised by TMC chief Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata, which the SP and the BSP have decided to be part of. "Those who are scared have decided to opt for alliances. They are the ones who make strategies to join hands with one to make the other lose," Sharma told reporters Thursday. Govt 'wronged' country on Rafale, only JPC can probe deal: Chidambaram

Firing a fresh salvo on the Rafale issue, the Congress on Friday alleged that the NDA government has wronged the country by reducing the number of aircraft bought under the deal as it "denied" the IAF the fighter jets it "desperately" needed and gave a "windfall" to Dassault Aviation by paying more per aircraft. China's Communist Party should learn from Soviet collapse, avoid mistakes: key CPC leader

As China grapples with the continued slowdown of its economy amid the trade war with the US, an influential member of the ruling Communist Party of China has reminded the CPC of the collapse of the former Soviet Union and warned against repeating mistakes that led to its demise. "One of the fatal errors (made by the Soviets) is that they followed a political system with highly centralised power. Not every socialist country does that," said Hu Deping, son of late reformist CPC general secretary Hu Yaobang whose death ultimately led to the infamous Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989. "Another (mistake) was their rigid economic system. Significantly in his speech Hu called on the party to "actively explore political reforms" without elaborating, further signifying the rumblings .
