What is Shiv Sena doing about Ram temple issue, asks VHP chief

Reacting to the Shiv Sena's announcement that its leaders would visit Ayodhya on June 16 to offer prayers, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad Sunday asked what the party, an ally in the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in Maharashtra, planned to do about the construction of the Ram Temple. VHP international president Vishnu Sadashiv Kokje said the Sena should offer the government "creative suggestions" which can pave the way for the building of the Ram temple in Ayodhya "as per Constitutional provisions". "The Sena should also say what it is doing in this matter (Ayodhya dispute)," Kokje said. "We have nothing to do with party politics on the Ram temple issue. But I believe that no party should play politics on this issue, because it is linked to the faith of millions of Hindus," Kokje told PTI, adding that his outfit was always in favour of building the temple at Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya under the purview of the Constitution. "The government should take all possible ...

MLAS defection: Indefinite fast by Vikramarkaenters second

The indefinite fast launched by Congress legislature party leader M Bhatti Vikramarka, in protest against the "illegal" merger of 12 party MLAs with the ruling TRS in Telangana, entered the second-day Sunday. Vikramarka said the fast had been taken up to safeguard democracy. Several Congress leaders including party MP Revanth Reddy, met Vikramarka at Dharna Chowk here, the protest venue. A health check up was also conducted on Vikramarka, party sources said. AICC in-charge of Congress affairs RC Khuntia had alleged that the merger of the 12 Congress MLAs with TRS is "illegal" and "undemocratic". Dismissing Congress' attack on his party, TRS working president K T Rama Rao had said there was nothing unconstitutional in what happened. He pointed out that TRS MLCs and MPs were admitted into the Congress in the past. Stand by Marathwada like Sardar Patel, Uddhav tells PM Modi

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray Sunday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should stand by the state's Marathwada region like how the country's first home minister Sardar Patel did. Thackeray, speaking in Aurangabad, also made a reference to the Marathwada Mukti Sangram, a people's movement that demanded the region, at the time of Independence a part of the Hyderbad Nizamate, be merged with Maharashtra. The success of the Marathwada liberation movement, along with several others, is seen as part of Patel's exemplary contribution in assimilating hundreds of princely states into the Indian Union at the time of Independence. After a violent struggle, the arid Marathwada region finally got separated from the Hyderabad Nizamate on September 17, 1948. "Modi should stand with Marathwada the way Patel did during Independence," Thackeray said. Reviewing the drought situation in Marathwada, the Sena chief said several farmers have not benefited from the government's crop insurance .

India requests Pak to let PM Modi's flight pass through its airspace

India has requested Pakistan to let Prime Minister Narendra Modi's aircraft fly over its airspace to Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan where he has to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit on June 13 and June 14, said a senior government official. Pakistan had fully closed its airspace on February 26 after an Indian Air Force (IAF) strike on a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror camp in Balakot. Since then, it has only opened two routes, both of them pass through southern Pakistan, of the total 11. "We have requested Pakistan to let the PM's plane fly over its airspace through one of the routes that has not been opened as yet. The PM has to attend the SCO meet on June 13 and June 14," a senior government official said. Pakistan had given special permission to India's then external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj to fly directly through Pakistani airspace to attend the SCO Foreign Ministers' meet in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on May 21. Apart from the two routes through southern Pakistan, ..

Europe in 'no position' to criticise Iran: Zarif

European countries are in "no position" to criticise Iran, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Sunday ahead of a visit by his German counterpart Heiko Maas. Germany's top diplomat is due in Tehran on Monday, against a backdrop of Iranian pressure for Europe to uphold commitments made under a 2015 nuclear deal since abandoned by the United States. "Europeans are certainly in no position to criticise Iran, even about issues that have nothing to do with" the agreement, Zarif said in televised remarks to journalists. Iran signed the landmark accord with China, Russia, Germany, Britain, France and the United States, leading to sanctions relief in exchange for Tehran curbing its nuclear programme. But last year, US President Donald Trump walked away from the accord and Washington has since imposed sweeping sanctions on Iran. European and Western policies "have only caused damage in the region," Zarif said. "Now some countries like Germany have stopped selling arms to Saudi Arabia for

Tension prevails in WB's Sandeshkhali, police looking for 'missing' persons

Tension prevailed on Sunday in strife-affected Sandeshkhali in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas, with the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Trinamool Congress accusing each other of orchestrating Saturday's violence that allegedly claimed at least four lives. A huge contingent of police officers has been deployed in the village and its surrounding areas under the Nyajat police station in the district, where the violence broke out in the evening, to prevent the tension from escalating. While the BJP leadership on Sunday claimed that five of its supporters were killed in the clash, the TMC said that six of its workers were missing. The bodies of one TMC worker and two BJP supporters have been identified by family members at a local hospital. As of Sunday morning, police are carrying out search operations to trace the persons alleged to have gone missing in what has been deemed as the "worst political violence" following the 2019 general election. Action against terror took place in Kashmir, not in Pak: Pawar

NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday slammed the Narendra Modi government's assertion of "hitting the enemy in his home", claiming that such actions against terrorists actually took place in Kashmir and not in Pakistan. Stating that cultural communalism had helped the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politically, he warned that one community standing against another was dangerous for the country's social harmony. During his Lok Sabha poll campaign, Prime Minister Modi had said "ghar mein ghus ghus ke marenge" (we will enter the terrorists' homes and eliminate them). He had made these remarks after the Indian Air Force targeted a Jaish-e-Mohammed terror camp in Pakistan's Balakot following a suicide bomber belonging to the proscribed organisation ramming his explosives-laden vehicle into a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) convoy in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama on February 14, killing 40 men. During a live chat with people on Facebook from his office here, Pawar noted that the public ..
