Germany's Social Democrats could end up deciding if the country faces snap elections, the leader of Angela Merkel's party said Monday, after her junior coalition partner sank into chaos over the resignation of its leader. In a surprise announcement that rattled Berlin, Social Democratic Party (SPD) leader Andrea Nahles said Sunday she was quitting her party's top jobs following an European election drubbing late last month. Merkel and other heavyweights in her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) have sought to calm nerves, saying they stood by the coalition. But CDU chief Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer conceded Monday that whether Germany goes to the polls before the end of the electoral term in 2021 would depend on the SPD's next move. "We are ready to keep this coalition going. How the SPD behaves is its decision," she told journalists following crisis talks within her centre-right party. "There are good reasons to not end a government lightly, from the view of the situation in Germany but
The national executive of the JD(U) will meet in Patna on June 9, days after the party declined to be part of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre in protest against the "symbolic representation" of one ministerial berth offered to it. JD(U) spokesperson K C Tyagi on Monday said the national executive meeting was necessitated as the party had to complete its organisational election and other procedures by October, in line with the Election Commission's (EC) directives. "Not much politics should be read into it," he said. Though JD(U) president and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has refuted suggestions of any difference with its ally, but his decision to induct eight legislators of his party as ministers in his government while leaving out the BJP has fuelled speculation of acrimony between the two parties. Revising its draft education policy, the Centre Monday dropped the contentious provision of compulsory teaching of Hindi in non-Hindi speaking states after the three-language proposal sparked outrage, mainly in Tamil Nadu. The DMK and other parties in Tamil Nadu, which had strongly opposed the proposal in the 484-page draft National Education Policy(NEP) to make Hindi a mandatory third language to be taught in schools across the country, welcomed the Centre's decision. The parties had alleged that the move was tantamount to thrusting the Hindi language on the non-Hindi speaking states. "Students who wish to change one or more of the three languages they are studying may do so in Grade 6 or Grade 7, so long as they are able to still demonstrate proficiency in three languages (one language at the literature level) in their modular Board Examinations some time during secondary school," the revised draft of the NEP said. In the earlier draft, the panel proposed mandatory teaching of Hindi
British petrochemicals maker Ineos is investing USD 2 billion to build three plants in Saudi Arabia, as western companies appear to be shedding their reluctance to do business with the kingdom following the killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi by Saudi agents in Turkey last year. Global outcry over the killing of Khashoggi, a critic of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, prompted leading Western CEOs and officials to back out of the prince's flagship investment forum in October. The US Congress has blocked about USD 2 billion in arms sales to Saudi Arabia in the past year, although the Trump administration is trying to work around Congress to supply arms to the kingdom. The new Saudi plants are part of a partnership with Saudi Aramco and France's Total.

The Centre dropping the contentious clause of mandatory Hindi teaching in non-Hindi speaking states was Monday welcomed by Tamil Nadu parties including main opposition DMK, celebrity music composer A R Rahman and the Congress in Telangana. The DMK said the decision showed that late party patriarch M Karunanidhi was "living," apparently suggesting it was a success to the late leader's legacy of opposing "imposition" of Hindi. A revised draft education policy was issued Monday that did not have a mention of Hindi being compulsory amid controversy over the recommendation of an HRD Ministry panel to teach the language in non-Hindi speaking states. In a tweet in Tamil, Rahman said, "A beautiful solution. Hindi is not compulsory in Tamil Nadu. The draft (policy) was amended."
