SC quashes PIL challenging partial closure of NH-44

The Supreme Court has dismissed a PIL challenging the Jammu and Kashmir government's decision to partially close the National Highway for civilian traffic twice a week till May 31.Last month, restrictions were imposed on civilian movement on NH-44 connecting Jammu to Srinagar in order to ensure adequate security to the movement of security forces' convoys while at the same time minimising public inconvenience.However, restrictions on civilian movement between Srinagar and Baramulla was completely lifted on May 2. The restrictions remain in force on the Srinagar - Udhampur stretch."The restriction on civilian movement between Srinagar and Baramulla on NH-44 will be completely lifted with effect from May 2, 2019. Left leader sees Cong-backed United Front-type govt after LS

Veteran Communist leader Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy sees a coalition of parties supported by the Congress to form the government at the Centre-- similar to the United Front regime more than two decades ago. Violence on polling day in Kashmir, West Bengal, voters turn out in good numbers

A grenade attack on a polling booth in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district, violence in West Bengal and EVM glitches were reported during the fifth phase of Lok Sabha polls Monday across seven states in which voters turned out in considerable numbers till the afternoon. Political heavyweights Rajnath Singh, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Smriti Irani are in the fray in this phase in which polling is underway in 14 seats in Uttar Pradesh, 12 in Rajasthan, seven seats each in West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh, five in Bihar and four in Jharkhand. In Jammu and Kashmir, polling began on a violent note with militants lobbing a grenade towards a polling station in Pulwama district, police said. A grenade was lobbed towards Rohmoo polling station in Pulwama but there were no reports of any casualties in the the blast, a police official said. Polling is being held in Pulwama and Shopian districts of Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency which also includes Anantnag and Kulgam districts. There are 18 .

20 poll personnel suspended for electoral malpractices in

A total of 20 polling personnel were suspended by the Election Commission on Monday in connection with electoral malpractices in Munger Lok Sabha constituency during the fourth phase of polling on April 29. The Election Commission will always take action against those who are found involved in electoral malpractices and tampering with the EVMs, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Bihar, H R Srinivasa, said. "Twenty polling personnel, including presiding officers, polling officers, magistrates and police personnel, were suspended for their involvement in electoral malpractices at two polling booths," Srinivasa said, adding, they had also assaulted a journalist covering the elections there on that day. The Election Commission had received complaints from the journalist and others in this regard after which it had ordered an inquiry into the alleged incident, Srinivasa said. Sacked BSF jawan Tej Bahadur Yadav on Monday moved the Supreme Court challenging the Election Commission's decision to cancel his candidature from the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency from where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is contesting.
