Central govt team arrives in Andhra Pradesh to assess flood damage

A Central government team arrived here on Wednesday to assess the flood damage in Andhra Pradesh due to the recent torrential downpours and deluge, affecting as many as seven districts. Local officials have prepared the preliminary report on the flood devastation and also readied a route map for the Central team's tour. "Officials (local) are explaining the flood situation and the damage it caused to the Central team at the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) office in Tadepalli," an official release said. The Central team is meeting with officials from various departments to learn about the havoc wreaked by the deluge, which affected West Godavari, Eluru, Krishna, NTR, Guntur, Bapatla and Palnadu districts. The team was apprised of the devastation caused by the Budameru rivulet in Vijayawada, besides the various relief activities undertaken by the state government.

Delhi records 913.1 mm of rain, 56% above normal this monsoon so far

The national capital has recorded 913.1 mm of rains this monsoon so far which is 56 per cent above the normal, according to weather department data. Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather Services, a private forecaster, told PTI that Delhi has seen an unusually high number of rainy days this year. Although the city experienced fewer rainy days in July, heavy downpours over just two or three days contributed significantly to the overall rainfall, he explained. Similarly, August saw a higher number of days with rain, contributing to the overall increase in rainfall, Palawat said. According to the India Meteorological Department, Delhi's primary weather station at Safdarjung recorded 913.1 mm of rain this season against the normal of 586.9 mm, marking a 56 per cent increase over the usual figure. Heavy rain creates havoc in southern Odisha, over 2,000 people evacuated

The heavy rain induced by a deep depression created havoc in southern Odisha districts on Tuesday, as about 2,000 affected people have been evacuated and brought to relief camps. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi directed officials to ensure adequate stock and supply of relief materials in the affected areas. Official reports said that roads were washed away, power supply was disrupted and several areas were inundated in heavy rains in the affected districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Gajapati, Nabarangpur, and Ganjam. Schools were shut in Malkangiri, the worst-hit district, Koraput and Ganjam on Tuesday, the reports said adding that the the roads connecting Malkangiri to Koraput were washed away at several places, disrupting connectivity between Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Heavy rain over last few days lead to closure of over 60 roads in Himachal

Over 60 roads have been blocked in Himachal Pradesh following rains in the past days, officials said on Monday. A maximum of 30 roads were closed in Shimla, 16 in Mandi, 10 in Kangra, two in Kullu and one each in Kinnaur, Una, Sirmaur and Lahaul and Spiti districts, the state emergency operation centre (SEOC) said. As many as 17 power schemes are also disrupted in the state, the SEOC said. Light rains lashed few parts of the state since Sunday evening. Kasauli was the wettest, recording 25 mm of rain followed by 18.6 mm in Shimla, 16 mm in Jubbarhatti, 12.3 mm in Kufri, 12.2 mm in Naina Devi, 8.4 mm in Solan, 5.2 mm in Berthin and 5 mm in Dalhousie. Himachal Pradesh's rainfall deficit since the onset of monsoon in the state on June 27 stands at 21 per cent, with the state receiving 524.1 mm rainfall against an average of 663.9 mm. A total of 158 people have died in rain-related incidents during the ongoing monsoon season from June 27 till September 7, while 30 are still missing.

A tropical disturbance in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico was expected to bring significant rainfall to parts of Texas and Louisiana this week and could quickly develop into a stronger storm, including a hurricane, the National Weather Service says. Deep depression over Bay of Bengal to bring heavy rain in region: Met

A depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a deep depression by Monday, bringing heavy rain in several districts in the southern part of West Bengal till September 12, the Met office said. The weather system is likely to cross Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Digha respectively by Monday night, it said on Sunday. Heavy rainfall is likely in the south Bengal districts of Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura, Purulia, Paschim Bardhaman, South 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Nadia, Murshidabad and Birbhum districts till September 12. Light to moderate rainfall is also likely over Kolkata and adjoining Howrah and Hooghly districts, it said. The weather office advised fishermen not to venture into the Bay of Bengal along Odisha-West Bengal coasts till September 11 as sea conditions will be rough to very rough with maximum wind speed of 50 to 60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph.

Depression over Andhra, Odisha coasts move north, says IMD official

The depression over north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts, which has been causing heavy rainfall over the past two days, moved northwestwards to cross the southern state's coast near Kalingapatnam in the wee hours of Sunday, said a India Meteorological Department official. The weather system crossed near Kalingapatnam between 12.30 am and 2.30 am and currently lay centred over south Odisha and adjoining north Andhra Pradesh, about 90 km north to northwest of Visakhapatnam and 120 km east of Malkangiri. "It is likely to move west-northwestwards across south Odisha and south Chhattisgarh to weaken into a well-marked low pressure area during the next 24 hours," the official said in a release. After a wetter-than-normal August, India is likely to experience above normal rainfall in September, with heavy to very heavy precipitation expected in northwest India and the surrounding areas. Addressing a virtual press conference, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that the country is expected to receive above normal rainfall in September, at 109 per cent of the long-period average of 167.9 mm. Delhi witnesses highest number of rainy days in last 14 years this August

With rainfall on 23 days, Delhi saw the highest number of rainy days in the last 14 years this August, officials said on Tuesday. The previous highest was 22 rainy days in 2012, followed by 20 days in 2011, according to data from the weather department. A "rainy day" is when the city receives more than 2.4 mm of rainfall.
