Nun rape case: Kerala catholic organisations stage demonstration against 'police inaction'

Members of various catholic reformation organisations took to the streets here Saturday to protest the alleged laxity in the probe into a complaint of rape filed by a nun against a Roman Catholic church bishop. Five nuns from a convent in Kottayam, to which the victim belonged, also took part in the demonstration and alleged that the victim had been denied justice by the church, police and the government as no action has been initiated against accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal of Jalandhar diocese. Protesters briefly disrupt World Hindu Congress in Chicago

A group of protesters briefly disrupted the proceedings of the World Hindu Congress in Chicago when they started raising slogans demanding the religious leaders at the meet to oppose the Indian government's alleged "actions against religious minorities". Two of the women protesters were arrested Friday evening and local police charged them with disorderly conduct and trespassing. They were released later in the night. UN postal agency to issue special Diwali stamp next month

The UN postal agency will issue special stamps here next month to commemorate the festival of Diwali. The United Nations Postal Administration will issue a New York special event sheet on October 19 to commemorate the Indian festival. Diwali, also known as Deepawali, is the joyous and popular festival of lights, which is celebrated in India and across the world by followers of many faiths, the UN agency said. The sheet in the denomination of USD 1.15 contains ten stamps and tabs featuring festive lights and the symbolic lamps known as diyas'. The background of the sheet features the United Nations Headquarters building illuminated with the message of Happy Diwali to celebrate the spirit of the festival. RSS chief asks Hindus to unite and work for better society

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat gave a clarion call on Friday to the Hindu community to unite and work for the betterment of the mankind. Addressing a gathering of some 2,500 delegates attending the second World Hindu Congress here, Bhagwat said the Hindu society has the largest number of meritorious persons. Do not agree with anti-sacrilege bills passed by Punjab: Chidambaram

Congress leader P Chidambaram on Friday said he was a liberal and did not agree with the anti-sacrilege bills recently passed by the Punjab Assembly. The former home minister, however, added that his views were "irrelevant" as he was not Punjab Chief minister Amarinder Singh's "boss". He said it was not Singh alone, but a number of legislators from almost all the parties in the state, who passed the bills, and hence, the question should be posed to them. FIR lodged on court order for 'promoting' conversion to Christianity: Cops

The police have booked 271 persons here on charges of promoting conversion to the Christianity by spreading misinformation about Hinduism, the police said Thursday. A First Information Report was lodged at Chandwak police station in the district. "The FIR was lodged on Wednesday against a total of 271 persons for various penal offences like cheating, defiling places of worship and prejudicing national integration," said Additional Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar Pandey. The officer identified Jaunpur natives Durga Prasad Yadav, Kirit Rai and Jitendra Ramone as those named in the FIR. Hamza Shahbaz, the son of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Shehbaz Sharif, was appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Thursday. Punjab Assembly Speaker Pervaiz Elahi issued a written order appointing 44-year-old Hamza as the Leader of the Opposition in the provincial assembly, Geo TV reported. Citing sources, it said Hamza's appointment had faced a delay after the Assembly Secretariat received a complaint about forged signatures on the nomination papers.
