In Agra, Hindus, Muslims come together for Janmashtami celebration

Setting an example of communal harmony, Hindus, and Muslims of Agra's Kheriya Mod locality come together to celebrate the festival of Janmashtami. This tradition of jointly celebrating the festival has been going on in this locality for about 15 years.Md. Janmashtami celebrated at ISKCON

More than 50,000 people assembled at the headquarters of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) at Mayapur during the Janmashtami celebrations Monday, a statement by the organisation said. As people from different parts of world congregated at the ISKCON compound, the deities of Radha Madhava were decked up by colourful flowers and the altar was decorated with natural grass and shrubs to create an ambiance of Vrindavan, the statement said. The gifts devotees for Krishna included toys, clothes and over 108 varieties of delicious food items representing Indian, Chinese, Russian delicacies. A large cake was also offered to the deity, the statement said.

The birth of Lord Krishna was rung in with religious fervour and gaiety across the country on Monday as devotees thronged temples, while in Maharashtra 'dahi handi' celebrations on the occasion saw enthusiastic participation by youngsters. In Mathura, which according to mythology, is the birthplace of Lord Krishna, lakhs of pilgrims paid obeisance at major temples amid tight security. According to the secretary of Sri Krishna Janmasthan, Kapil Sharma, nearly 20 lakh pilgrims paid obeisance at temples in Mathura, Vrindaban, Barsana, Govardhan, Nandgaon, Baldeo, Mahaban and Gokul. Vrindaban was the centre of attraction for pilgrims in the noon, where the festival was celebrated in three major temples -- Radha Raman temple, Radha Damodar temple and Shah Ji temple. UAE announces first astronauts to go to space

The United Arab Emirates has selected its first two astronauts to go on a mission to the International Space Station, Dubai's ruler said Monday. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashed al-Maktoum named the new astronauts as Hazza al-Mansouri, 34, and 37-year-old Sultan al-Neyadi. Writing on Twitter, he said the duo "raise the bar of ambitions for future Emirati generations". Sheikh Mohammed, the UAE's vice president and prime minister, last year vowed to send four Emirati astronauts to the space station within five years. The UAE has its sights set on space with a programme worth 20 billion dirhams (USD 5.4 billion), according to Sheikh Mohammed. The oil-rich Gulf nation has already announced plans to become the first Arab country to send an unmanned probe to orbit Mars by 2021, naming it "Hope". Celebrations across Rajasthan on Janmashtami

Janmashtami, the celebration of Lord Krishna's birth, was observed on Monday all over Rajasthan where temples were decked up and visited by a large number of devotees. People thronged famous temples like Govind Devji temple in Jaipur among others since early morning. Elaborate arrangements for security and crowd management were made at the Govind Devji temple which is the centre of attraction among pilgrims. Thousands of devotees visited the temple amid tight security, police said. A large number of people also visited the famous Shreenathji temple in Rajsamand's Nathdwara. Other temples in Jaipur and other parts of the state as well were also decorated with flowers and special lightings for the Janmashtmi celebrations.

RIL donates Rs 1.1 crore to Tirumala temple

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) Monday made an offering of Rs 1.1 crore to the famous hill shrine of Lord Venkateswara at nearby Tirumala. It also requested that the money be used for the temple-run Sri Venkateswara Praanadaana Trust here. A representative of the company handed over a Demand Draft of Rs 1.1 crore to a temple official. The donation would be utilised for the SV Pranadana Trust that was established in 2001, a temple official told PTI. The trust was set up to provide free medical facilities at the temple run Super Speciality Hospital here for those suffering from life-threatening diseases.

Janmashtami celebrated with religious fervour in Delhi

Janmashtami, the celebration of Lord Krishna's birth, was observed on Monday with thousands of devotees thronging temples in the rain-lashed national capital and offering prayers on the occasion. The famous Krishna temples in Delhi - Laxmi Narayan Mandir, ISKCON temple, Amar Colony, Kirhsna Pranami Mandir, Hare Krishna Mandir among others, were specially decorated up for the festival. Young Indian shuttlers Anoushka Parikh and Saurabh Sharma and Krishna Prasad Garaga and Dhruv Kapila clinched the mixed doubles and men's doubles titles respectively at the RSL Kharkiv International challenge in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Second seeds Saurabh and Anoushka defeated Poland's Pawel Smilowski and Magdalena Swierczynska, seeded fourth, 18-21 21-19 22-20 in the mixed doubles summit clash that lasted an hour and three minutes. Lakhs of pilgrims paid obeisance at major temples here on Monday on the occasion of Janmashtami amid tight security. The secretary of Sri Krishna Janmasthan, Kapil Sharma, said with special arrangements put in place this year, devotees could pay obeisance to the deity without any obstacle and could get prasadam easily. UAE names 2 astronauts to go to International Space Station

The ruler of Dubai has announced the names of two astronauts from the United Arab Emirates who will be heading to the International Space Station, a first for the Gulf nation. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who also serves as the UAE's vice president and prime minister, made the announcement on Monday on Twitter. Sheikh Mohammed named the astronauts as Hazza al-Mansouri and Sultan al-Nayadi. Their missions are scheduled for next year. The UAE has a fledgling space program with big ambitions.
