Will Rohit, Kohli play till 2027 ODI World Cup? Gambhir gives his verdict

India head coach Gautam Gambhir on Monday said he expects senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to be available for most of the ODIs and Tests after retiring from T20 Internationals, expressing hope that they would "keep their fitness" to be in the reckoning for the 2027 50-over World Cup. Both Rohit and Kohli announced their retirement from the T20I format after India's World Cup win earlier this month and were expected to miss the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. However, they both were named in India's squad for next month's three ODIs in the island nation keeping in mind the Champions Trophy, which is slated for the first quarter of the next year. Speaking to the media for the first time after being named India's head coach, Gambhir highlighted the importance of workload management for ace fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah but expected the regular presence of Rohit and Kohli going forward. "I've said it before that workload management for someone like Jasprit Bumrah is important. For

You came at our level leaving your achievements behind: Rohit thanks Dravid

India's T20 World Cup-winning skipper Rohit Sharma has penned an emotional farewell note to the team's former head coach Rahul Dravid, expressing "gratitude" for his man-management skills and for leaving his baggage of stardom outside the dressing room. Dravid, following a nearly three-year long stint as head coach, stepped down at the end of India's title-winning T20 World Cup campaign in the West Indies last month. "My wife (Ritika Sajdeh) refers to you as my work wife and I am lucky to get to call you that too," the current skipper wrote about his first international captain on his Instagram page. Rohit's tribute was also an indicator of how the player-coach equation works in the Indian dressing room. "I have been trying to find the right words to properly express my feelings on this but I'm not sure I ever will," the Indian skipper, not known to be overtly emotional, wrote. "You are an absolute stalwart of this game but you left all of your accolades and achievements at the do

With 10 test matches ahead Rohit, Kohli, Bumrah might skip Lanka ODIs

India skipper Rohit Sharma and premier batter Virat Kohli are likely to be rested for the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in August and either Hardik Pandya or KL Rahul will be asked to lead the side. India pacer Jasprit Bumrah too is likely to be given a break from the ODI series. It is understood that Indian cricket's biggest contemporary stars have sought a longish break from the BCCI, considering the gruelling last three months since the start of IPL. For 37-year-old Rohit, it has been close to six months that he took a break. The Mumbaikar played every series since the South Africa Test series in December-January, followed by Afghanistan T20Is, England Test series, IPL and the recently-concluded T20 World Cup. "Both are automatic choices in ODI set up and the three 50 over games against England before the Champions Trophy is good enough practice for them. For next few months, they both will prioritize Tests and India will play 10 of them between September to January,"

India shall win both CT and WTC final under Rohit's captaincy: Jay Shah

T20 World Cup-winning skipper Rohit Sharma will continue to lead India in the ODI and Test formats BCCI secretary Jay Shah said on Sunday, exuding confidence that the country will win next year's Champions Trophy and World Test Championship under his captaincy. The 37-year-old Rohit, who became the third Indian captain after legendary Kapil Dev and Mahendra Singh Dhoni to win a global trophy, has announced his retirement from the T20 format. "The next stage is the WTC final and the Champions Trophy. I have full faith in Rohit Sharma's captaincy, that we will be the champions in both these tournaments," secretary Shah said in a video message. The Champions Trophy, scheduled in Pakistan next year, will be held after eight years (since 2017 in UK), and even though the draft schedule has been submitted to the ICC, the BCCI hasn't yet given its green light to it. It is understood BCCI will again push for the 'Hybrid Model' like 2023 ODI Asia Cup where India played all its matches, ...

Rohit, Suryakumar's banter on 'The Catch' captivates Maharashtra Assembly

Cricket outshone politics in Maharashtra Legislature on Friday as Rohit Sharma and other T20 World Cup winning team members from the city were honoured at the Vidhan Bhawan. When Suryakumar Yadav, who took the incredible match-defining catch in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa rose to speak, those in the Central Hall, including ministers and legislators, chanted in unison that he speak on the catch. Catch basla hatat (the catch just landed in my hands), Suryakumar said in Marathi, to loud cheers from the audience. He then went on to give a replay of sorts, gesturing with his hands on how he took the catch. The team captain Rohit Sharma who spoke after Suryakumar, said, Surya just now said that the ball sat in his hands. Fifties, hundreds don't matter, I want to bat with tempo: Rohit Sharma

He fell short of a potentially record-shattering hundred, but milestones "don't matter" to India skipper Rohit Sharma, whose sole aim while batting is to "put bowlers under pressure" by hitting them all over the field. Rohit's 92-run knock that came off 41 deliveries steered India to a 24-run win over former champions Australia in their final Super 8 outing of the ongoing T20 World Cup on Monday. The record for the fastest T20 World Cup hundred belongs to West Indian swashbuckler Chris Gayle, who pulled it off in 47 deliveries in the 2016 edition. Expectedly adjudged player of the match for the memorable effort, which was punctuated by eight sixes and seven fours, the 37-year-old said his focus was only on maintaining the "tempo" of the match. India will take on England in the second semifinal on June 27. "It was a good wicket, and you want to try and back yourself to play those kinds of shots. I've been trying to do that for a few years now, and I'm glad it came off today. The ...

India vs Afg: We understood conditions & planned accordingly, says Rohit

India skipper Rohit Sharma on Thursday lauded the team for their comfortable 47-run victory over Afghanistan, attributing the clinical all-round display to better planning which was possible due to extensive knowledge about local conditions. India dishd out a superlative show as they posted 181 for 8 and then returned to dismiss Afghanistan for 134 to register a comfortable 47 run win. "The last two years we've played T20s here, so we understand the conditions and planned accordingly. We adapted well and got 180, which was a great effort from the batters. We had class bowlers who defended it perfectly," Rohit said during the post-match presentation. "Everyone came in and did their job, that's critical and we dwell on it. SKY and Hardik's partnership was critical at that point, we needed someone to bat deep which they did." Jasprit Bumrah was the standout bowler as he returned with brilliant figures of 4-1-7-3. "We know Bumrah's class and what he can do. Important for us to use him

Rohit Sharma's coach shaped my career, says USA cricketer Harmeet Singh

Left-arm spinner Harmeet Singh, who is a part of the USA team that is enjoying a fairytale run in the ongoing T20 World Cup in the Americas, has revealed that Indian captain Rohit Sharma's coach Dinesh Lad has been instrumental in shaping his career. The 31-year-old represented India in two Under-19 World Cups and played for Mumbai at the age-group level before moving to the USA. He is now a member of the American team that has made the Super Eight stage in its very first appearance at the showpiece. "I would like to thank everybody who supported me in this journey and especially to Dinesh Lad Sir. My talent was first recognised by Lad Sir, who was the coach and mentor during my school days (Rohit Sharma studied in the same school)," Harmeet recalled in a video shared with PTI. "In fact, he only advised me to join his school. There he provided me with everything he possibly could," he said. Harmeet said his progress would not have been possible without Lad. It certainly is about mindset: Ponting on India's global trophy drought

The all-conquering Australia under Ricky Ponting's leadership knew the art of peaking at the right time in global events and the two-time World Cup-winning captain reckons India will need to do the same besides overcoming some mental demons to win an elusive ICC trophy. Cricket's powerhouse India, who last won an ICC trophy in 2013, began their T20 World Cup campaign on an emphatic note in New York on Wednesday, beating Ireland by eight wickets. Speaking to PTI from New York, the 49-year-old Australian great said India are well-placed to end their barren run in ICC events and need to find a way to deal with the enormous pressure that comes with representing a cricket-crazy nation. "You've got to try and keep a clear mind where you can focus on the task at hand rather than thinking too far ahead or worrying about any sort of external pressures," said Ponting. "There's no doubting the talent (in India squad), but we also shouldn't forget that the World Cups are not easy to win. There
