Atmanirbharta mindset needed to deal with global turbulence: Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said the world is facing a "volatile and uncertain era", having experienced the successive impact of the Covid pandemic, multiple conflicts and "trade upheavals", and asserted that 'atmanirbharta' (self reliance) is the mindset needed to deal with "global turbulence". In his address at a conclave here on Wednesday, Jaishankar also said that in an era of globalisation and urbanisation, "traditions are often lost with time". But, by nurturing them, "we have made Indian tourism even more attractive", he said. Pointing to the theme of the event -- 'Invincible Spirit of India' -- the minister said, "We are a civilisational state, a state, a society that has withstood the tests of time, and nurtured its culture, traditions and heritage." "Our real strengths have been our people. Our people and their self-belief. We have overcome adversities and we have addressed multiple challenges in the journey towards progress and prosperity." The event was .

EAM Jaishankar to visit Russia next week; to hold talks with top leaders

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will travel to Moscow next week to hold crucial talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, amid some strain in India's ties with the US over New Delhi's procurement of crude oil from Russia. Jaishankar's trip to Russia comes days after National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval travelled to Russia and met President Vladimir Putin and several top-ranking officials. The two sides are also likely to give final touches to various elements of Putin's visit to India later this year, people familiar with the external affairs minister's trip to Moscow said. Deputy spokesperson of Russia's foreign ministry Aleksey Fadeyev said in Moscow that the heads of the two countries' foreign offices will discuss "most important issues of the bilateral agenda". The people cited above said Jaishankar will be on a two-day visit to Russia and is likely to call on Putin, besides holding wide-ranging talks with Foreign Minister Lavrov. The external affairs mini

World leaders hail Armenia-Azerbaijan peace deal, urge cautious optimism

Residents and politicians in Armenia and Azerbaijan responded Saturday with cautious hope and skepticism in some cases after their leaders signed a US-brokered agreement at the White House aimed at ending decades of hostilities. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed the agreement on Friday in the presence of US President Donald Trump, who stood between the leaders as they shook hands a gesture Trump reinforced by clasping their hands together. While the agreement does not constitute a formal peace treaty, it represents a significant diplomatic step toward normalisation of relations. The two countries remain technically at war, and the deal does not resolve the longstanding dispute over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. It does, however, reflect the shifting power dynamics following Azerbaijan's 2023 military victory, which forced the withdrawal of Armenian forces and ethnic Armenians from the region. Among the agreement's ..

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in a written response to a query also said the government pursues a "multi-pronged strategy" that includes diversifying supply sources, enhancing domestic production of oil and gas, expanding the adoption of alternate energy sources and advancing the energy transition. He was asked details of the steps taken by the government to safeguard the country's strategic and energy interests amid global tension, and also whether the government has raised concerns with countries like the US regarding the "impact of sanctions" on India's petroleum imports from Russia and Iran. Last week, US President Donald Trump had announced 25 per cent reciprocal tariffs on India that came into effect from August 7. The US president on Wednesday also signed an executive order ...

No third party intervention in ceasefire with Pak during Op Sindoor: EAM

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday made it clear that there was no third party intervention in bringing about a ceasefire with Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, asserting that the halting of the Operation was not linked to trade. Intervening in the special discussion on Operation Sindoor in the Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump did not have any phone calls between April 22 and June 16. The Opposition has been attacking the government on claims made by Trump on mediation in halting of hostilities between India and Pakistan by using the threat of trade. He said India will not tolerate any cross-border terrorism and has responded to Pakistan by carrying out Operation Sindoor and will continue to do so whenever the neighbouring country attacked again. Noting that the Pahalgam terror attack was absolutely unacceptable, he said a redline was crossed by Pakistan and there had to be accountability and justice. "Blood

Rahul Gandhi slams EAM's China policy, calls it a 'full blown circus'

The Congress on Tuesday hoped that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will "finally agree" to a discussion on China in the forthcoming Monsoon session of Parliament, and said that when Parliament could debate the border situation during the 1962 Chinese invasion then why not now. Tagging a media report on External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar calling on Chinese President Xi Jinping and apprising him about the recent development in India-China bilateral ties, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took a swipe at him, saying he is "now running a full blown circus aimed at destroying India's foreign policy". "I guess the Chinese foreign minister will come and apprise Modi about recent developments in China-India ties. The EAM is now running a full blown circus aimed at destroying India's foreign policy," Gandhi said in a post on X.
