Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and her Chinese counterpart, Wang Wentao, expressed concern Thursday about policies of each other's governments following Chinese raids on consulting firms and U.S. curbs on exports of semiconductor technology, their governments said. The two sides announced no progress in disputes over technology and security but said Raimondo and Wang promised to strengthen exchanges on trade issues. Companies from both sides have been buffeted by tighter official controls on trade in semiconductors and other activity on security grounds. Political relations between the two governments are at their lowest level in decades following disputes over technology, security, China's territorial claims and Beijing's treatment of Hong Kong and ethnic minorities. Raimondo raised concerns about Chinese actions against U.S. companies in China, her office said in a statement. It said they also discussed the trade and investment environment and areas for potential cooperation but

The Chinese government on Wednesday defended its ban on products from US memory chipmaker Micron Technology Inc. in some computer systems after Washington expressed concern, adding to strains over technology and security. The security review of Micron products was conducted in accordance with the law," said a foreign ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning. The Cyberspace Administration of China on Sunday said Micron products have unspecified security risks but gave no details. It banned them from computers that handle sensitive information. That came after Washington, Japan and the Netherlands blocked Chinese access to technology to make advanced processor chips on security grounds at a time when the ruling Communist Party is threatening to attack Taiwan and is more assertive toward its other Asian neighbours. China's cybersecurity review does not target specific countries or regions, Mao said. We do not exclude technologies and products from any country. Companies on both sides have bee

Britain's government unveiled its long-awaited semiconductor strategy on Friday, catching up with similar efforts by Western allies seeking to reduce reliance on Asian production of the computer chips that are essential to modern life. Under UK plan, the country's semiconductor industry will get up to 1 billion pounds (USD 1.2 billion) in government investment over the next decade. The amount is dwarfed by the US Chips Act, which provides USD 52 billion in government incentives, and the European Union's 43 billion euro (USD 46 billion) chip programme. The money provided by the British government will be focused on research and development, design and intellectual property and on cutting-edge compound semiconductors. The first 200 million pounds will be provided between 2023 and 2025. Our new strategy focuses our efforts on where our strengths lie, in areas like research and design, so we can build our competitive edge on the global stage," Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said.
