4th Test: Pujara's 132 helps India take 27-run lead against England

Cheteshwar Pujara's unbeaten 132 on Friday helped India post 273 in the first innings and take a 27-run lead against England on the second day of the fourth Test at the Ageas Bowl cricket ground. After restricting England to 246, thanks to strong bowling by pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami, the Indian innings didn't start well as openers Shikhar Dhawan (23) and Lokesh Rahul (19) were dismissed cheaply by Stuart Broad (2/50).Later on, Pujara came in and added 92 runs for the third wicket in a partnership with skipper Virat Kohli (46), who once again looked good for a big score before Sam Curran got his wicket.Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane also got out cheaply and could only manage to add 11 runs to the team total. What happened next was something that India could have never imagined as the side slumped from 161 for four to 195 for eight in the final session of play. England off-spinner Moeen Ali (5/63) provided the major wickets and shined for his side. Ali didn't ...

Asian Games : Indian hockey eves settle for silver

The Indian women's hockey team's glorious campaign at the 18th Asian Games Jakarta-Palembang 2018 came to an end on Firday, which saw them lose 1-2 to Japan in a well-contested Final held here at the Gelora Bung Karno Hockey Field. The Japanese team secured their victory with two goals from penalty corners, which were scored by Minami Shimizu (11') and Motomi Kawamura (44') while India's only goal was scored by Neha Goyal (25'). The loss meant that the Indian team secured a silver medal at the Asian Games for the first time since 1998, when they had lost to Republic of Korea by the same margin.Riding high on confidence, the Indian team started the first quarter well as they created a few opportunities, which saw forwards Lalremsiami, Navneet Kaur and skipper Rani come close to scoring, but were denied by a rigid Japanese defense. The Japanese got into the game and had their first real chance in the eighth minute as they forced Indian Goalkeeper Savita to make a save off Aki Yamada's ...

Pujara's ton helps India take slender lead against England

Cheteshwar Pujara carved out one of his finest Test hundreds, a knock punctuated by a mix of trademark tenacity and grace, as India eked out a slender 27-run lead against England in the fourth match here today. Owing to the 30-year-old's unbeaten 132, his first century outside the sub-continent since 2013, India recovered from a precarious 195 for eight to go past England and finish at 273 in their first innings. Leading the five-match series 2-1, hosts England were all out for 246 in their first innings, and finished the second day at six for no loss in their second innings to trail by 21 runs. Pujara's innings and his last-wicket stand of 46 runs with Jasprit Bumrah (6) have virtually made the encounter at Rose Bowl a game of second innings. He got to his 15th century, and second outside Asia, with a double over the bowler's head, and well aware of the significance of the knock to the final outcome, the unassuming India number three raised his bat and helmet in celebration. It was ..

Joint UK bid for 2030 World Cup would be 'wise idea', says UEFA chief

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said today he is enthusiastic about the prospect of a joint United Kingdom bid to host the 2030 World Cup finals. The English Football Association recently revealed it was looking into the idea of putting itself forward to host the tournament, and a joint bid with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland could be a possibility. The fact that the World Cup is set to increase from 32 to 48 teams for the 2026 tournament in North America means going alone would be a greater challenge for England, which last hosted the World Cup in 1966. "I think it would be a wise idea. The infrastructure in the UK is very good. In a way, if more countries bid, there is more chance to win, but from the other point of view you have less votes," Ceferin told journalists in Monaco, where UEFA have been hosting the draws for the group stages of their club competitions. England went out in the first round of voting to host this year's World Cup, but has made little secret of its ..

Ronaldo omitted from Portugal squad at own request

Cristiano Ronaldo has been left out of Portugal's squad for the Nations League and friendly matches at his own request, coach Fernando Santos said today. Santos said he and Ronaldo had discussed the situation after the star moved from Real Madrid to Juventus. "After a conversation I had with the player, who had just signed with Juventus, I decided, given the process of adaptation he needed, that he would not be with us during this window," the coach said. Ronaldo scored at least 40 goals a season in the last eight seasons at Real Madrid but has yet to score for his new club. Portugal, who were knocked out of the World Cup in the last 16 by Uruguay, host World Cup finalists Croatia in a friendly in Faro on Thursday. They will then await the visit of Italy on September 10 for their first match in the new Nations League, a format UEFA hopes will give a new edge to matches that were previously friendlies. Just 13 of the 24 Portuguese players selected were at the World Cup, including ...

Sneijder set for final Dutch goodbye

Record-breaking Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder is set to play one last time for the national team next week, bringing an end to an illustrious career spanning 15 years and more than 130 appearances. Netherlands national coach Ronald Koeman announced a 25-man squad Friday to face Peru in a friendly in Amsterdam next week, to be played in honour of Sneijder, a former Ajax, Real Madrid and Galatasaray midfielder. "This is the final time Wesley Sneijder will form part of the selection camp," the Royal Dutch Football Federation (KNVB) said in a statement. "The record-breaking international ends his national football career officially on Thursday with 133 caps to his name," it said. One of the great playmakers of his era, Sneijder, 34, remains a versatile and always energetic midfielder. He surpassed former goalkeeping great Edwin van der Sar's Dutch national 130-match record in June 2017 on his 33rd birthday. He also finds himself in a small group of players who have been capped more ...

Real and Barcelona turn focus to staying perfect in La Liga

After learning who they must face in this season's Champions League group stage, holders Real Madrid and rivals Barcelona sink their teeth into Liga opponents this weekend as the only sides to have won their first two games. Routine wins over Getafe and Girona have ensured that Real, whose main Champions League threat in a mild Group A is Roma, did not suffer an early wobble as they embark on the post-Zinedine Zidane era with coach Julen Lopetegui. Ernesto Valverde's Barcelona were likewise efficient if unspectacular in beating Alaves at home and then edging Valladolid away on a pitch that tore up as soon as the game began and sparked a league inquiry. This weekend the leading pair and perennial favourites face what should be home banker wins. Real meet modest neighbours Leganes on Saturday and on Sunday Barca host Huesca, a side with an away success under its belt from the opening day at Eibar. The European champions for the 13th time were showered in plaudits at the Champions League

Badrinath retires from all forms of cricket

Former India cricketer Subramaniam Badrinath today announced his retirement from all forms of the game. The stylish Tamil Nadu middle-order batsman, who played two Tests, seven ODIs and a lone T20 international, said he had been pondering retirement for the past one year and took the decision as he wanted to spend more time with his family. "I want to spend more time with my family, that is my priority now. It played a huge role in me taking this decision. My motivational levels had also come down a bit in the past few years.Fitness was never an issue for me. But I have been pondering over (retirement) it for the past one year," he told reporters here. Badrinath, who donned the role of coach (for Karaikudi Kaalai) in the recent Tamil Nadu Premier League-3, was the mainstay of the State Ranji team for over a decade before moving on to play for other sides including Vidarbha and Hyderabad. Under-fire Mourinho insists he is 'one of the greatest'

Jose Mourinho insisted today he is one of the world's best managers in a continued defence of his managerial record despite Manchester United's recent struggles. Mourinho ended a press conference following his side's 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham on Monday by demanding respect from the media. United also lost, 3-2, at Brighton the week before, but the Portuguese launched into a fierce defence of his record. "I am the manager of one of the greatest clubs in the world but I am also one of the greatest managers in the world," said Mourinho. That was the start of another edgy exchange between Mourinho and journalists in which he was asked whether he could still claim to be one of the greatest managers in the world should he fail to win a league title with United. And, in keeping with his recent self-justification, Mourinho even cited 18th century German philosopher Georg Hegel. "Of course," said Mourinho. "Hegel says the truth is in the whole, the truth is always in the whole. "Do you ask .

Thierry Henry promoted to Belgium's assistant coach: federation

Belgium today promoted Thierry Henry to the number two job with the national side, just days after the Arsenal and France great turned down the manager's job at Bordeaux. The 41-year-old, who helped manager Roberto Martinez steer the Red Devils to third place at the World Cup in Russia, rebuffed the six-time French champions citing "uncertainty" behind the scenes at the club. Henry, the all-time leading goalscorer for both Arsenal and France, takes over from Graeme Jones who left the Belgian set-up to join the staff at second-tier English side West Bromwich Albion. As forwards coach, Henry played a major role in guiding a talented Belgian side to the World Cup semi-final where they were edged out by eventual winners France. "We are delighted that he has decided to stay with the Red Devils, and to stay with what we started in the World Cup in Russia, a very important moment for us," Martinez told a news conference. Henry juggled his role with Belgium with extensive TV punditry in ...
