Ledecky celebrates new TYR deal with sizzling 200m free win

Five-time Olympic champion Katie Ledecky clocked the fastest 200m freestyle time in the world this year on Friday, hours after announcing she'd inked her first professional sponsorship deal with TYR. Ledecky has broken 14 world records and won six Olympic medals, but the 21-year-old didn't turn professional until after the NCAA collegiate championships in March. California swimwear manufacturer TYR said in a statement on Friday that their deal with Ledecky "represents the most lucrative partnership in the history of the swim industry," although no terms were revealed. In Friday's Pro Swim meeting sponsored by TYR, Ledecky won the 200m free in 1 minute, 54.56 seconds. That improved on the previous best of 2018, the 1:54.81 set by Canadian Taylor Ruck at the Commonwealth Games in April. Melanie Margalis was a distant second in 1:57.99. "That's exactly where I was hoping to be," Ledecky said. "I felt like I could go a 1:54 tonight, after going a 55 this morning. I just wanted to put ...

Trophy hunting: World Cup replicas selling fast in Vietnam

In a dusty workshop on the outskirts of Hanoi, workers busily mould, set and spray hundreds of replica World Cup trophies as orders flood in ahead of next week's tournament. Demand in football-mad Vietnam is soaring for the hand made plaster models of the real 18-carat gold trophy that will go to the winners of the month-long World Cup hosted by Russia that starts Thursday. Craftsman Vuong Hong Nhat has been making the foot-tall replicas since the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, perfecting his hand-carved design over several months to give as gifts. "Initially I didn't want to sell the trophies, I was just trying to feed my passion for football and give them to friends and family," said the 57-year-old Manchester United fan. But they proved so popular he now sells them and expects to receive 3,000 orders this year -- triple the number he made in 2014. With just three assistants in his small workshop he's struggling to keep up with demand. "I work all day to fill the orders, but it's .

Dominant Indian women crush Pakistan by 7 wickets

A dominant India sailed into the final of the women's Asia Cup Twenty20 tournament with a seven-wicket drubbing of arch-rivals Pakistan in their last round robin match here today. Electing to bat after winning the toss, Pakistan were restricted to 72 for seven in the allotted 20 overs at the Kinrara Academy Oval. Left-arm spinner Ekta Bisht was the most successful India bowler, claiming impressive figures of 3/14 in her four-over spell. The others chipped in with a scalp apiece, although pace spearhead Jhulan Goswami went wicket-less surprisingly. Bisht was named Player of the Match. Chasing a meagre target, India completed the task with as many as 23 balls to spare. Opener Smriti Mandhana top-scored with 38 off 40 balls while skipper Harmanpreet Kaur made 34 in 49 deliveries. Veteran Mithali Raj and Deepti Sharma failed to open their account, but their failures did not come in the way of India's win. Pietersen questions England's sense of direction

Kevin Pietersen has questioned whether England know where they are going, saying their focus on one-day cricket risks alienating fans who care more about Test success. The past two years have seen a vast improvement in England's limited-overs form, with a team that suffered an embarrassing first-round exit at the 2015 World Cup now top of the one-day international rankings. The form of Eoin Morgan's side has been a huge boost to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), who have staked a lot -- including a contentious rejigging of the domestic season -- on England winning the World Cup for the first time when the 2019 edition takes place on home soil. But England's white-ball rise has been accompanied by a dip in their Test results, with Joe Root's men going down to a 4-0 Ashes defeat in Australia before a 1-0 series reverse in New Zealand. England have prided themselves on being a tough Test side to beat in their own conditions but had to battle back to share a two-match series ...

Werner shines as nervy Germany end winless streak

Timo Werner impressed as Germany gave themselves a pre-World Cup boost on Friday by breaking their five-match winless streak with a nervy 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia in their final warm-up game. First-half scores by striker Werner and an Omar Hawsawi own goal sealed the win as Germany were only rarely threatened by Saudi Arabia, who play hosts Russia in the opening World Cup match in Moscow on Thursday. Werner was in the thick of the action for the 62 minutes he played of the friendly. The scoreline flattered the Arabians, who converted a late penalty at the second attempt. Although Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen saved Mohammad Al-Sahlawi's weak spot-kick, Taisir Al-Jassim banged home the rebound on 85 minutes. However, German hearts were in mouths in added time when only robust defending prevented Al-Sahlawi grabbing a shock equaliser. "There are no little teams anymore and we didn't do well in a few areas," admitted Germany winger Marco Reus, who hit the post early ...
