Changes coming to the mobile application and eventually the website are part of the vision of co-founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg to have Facebook be a place for cozy online gatherings as well as more open public forums. "As the world gets bigger and more connected, we need that sense of intimacy more than ever," Zuckerberg said as he opened the F8 developer conference for the social networking giant. "That's why I believe the future is private." The new design is in line with Facebook's aim to shift its focus to small-scale communication in response to criticism over failing to curb misinformation and manipulation of the platform used by 2.3 billion people. Zuckerberg to explain how Facebook gets 'privacy focused'

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will kick off the company's annual F8 developer conference Tuesday with what are expected to be more details about his new "privacy-focused" vision for the social network part of his strategy for batting away Facebook's growing array of critics, emboldened regulators and competitors. Zuckerberg and his lieutenant, Sheryl Sandberg, have apologised repeatedly over the past year for Facebook's ever-expanding list of mishaps over privacy, data misuse and security problems. Last week, the company said it is setting aside USD 3 billion to cover a possible fine from the Federal Trade Commission over privacy violations. Facebook has suffered hacks, allowed hate speech and live-streamed mass-shooting horror. Amid all that, Zuckerberg is likely to focus on Facebook's future by emphasising private messaging, Facebook's role in "communities," and harnessing artificial intelligence to improve discourse. Conference attendees by and large software developers who make a

Vodafone identified Huawei security flaw decade ago

British telecoms group Vodafone tackled a security flaw with Huawei technology a decade ago, it was revealed Tuesday amid widespread concerns over the Chinese giant developing 5G networks abroad. Bloomberg reported that Vodafone, Europe's biggest mobile phone company, identified hidden so-called backdoors in software that could have handed Huawei unauthorized access to the carrier's fixed-line network in Italy used to connect to the internet. The financial news wire cited Vodafone's security briefing documents from 2009 and 2011. Vodafone confirmed to AFP that the issues were resolved but stressed it was incorrect to suggest that the flaw could have allowed unauthorized access to Italy's fixed-line network. "The 'backdoor' that Bloomberg refers to is Telnet, which is a protocol that is commonly used by many vendors in the industry for performing diagnostic functions.
