Soon, 'smart' clothes that can detect presence of gases

Scientists have developed a novel method to create dyed threads for clothes that change colour when they detect a variety of gases. The researchers at Tufts University in the US demonstrated that the threads can be read visually, or even more precisely by use of a smartphone camera, to detect changes of colour due to analytes as low as 50 parts per million. Woven into clothing, smart, gas-detecting threads could provide a reusable, washable, and affordable safety asset in medical, workplace, military and rescue environments, they said. The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, describes the fabrication method and its ability to extend to a wide range of dyes and detection of complex gas mixtures. While not replacing the precision of electronic devices commonly used to detect volatile gases, incorporation of gas detection into textiles enables an equipment-free readout, without the need for specialised training, the researchers said. Bayer confirms cyber attack but says no data stolen

German chemicals giant Bayer confirmed Thursday reports it had suffered a hacking attack, but insisted that so far no data appeared to have been stolen. The Leverkusen-based group "detected indications of (hacker group) Winnti infections at the beginning of 2018," a spokesman told AFP, confirming reports by German public broadcasters BR and NDR. "There is no evidence of data outflow," he added. Hackers from the so-called Winnti group, believed to be linked to the Chinese state, were first spotted using malicious software to spy on Bayer's activities in early 2018 and were present in company networks until late last month, the media reports said. Bayer said that "in close collaboration with" private cyber security organisation DCSO and police in North Rhine-Westphalia state it had "identified, analysed and cleaned up the affected systems." BJP takes lead in advertising on Google, YouTube with Rs 1.21 cr spend

A week before the first phase of elections, ruling BJP has taken a big lead in advertising on Google and its affiliated platforms such as YouTube with an ad spend of Rs 1.21 crore, while its main rival Congress has spent only Rs 54,100, the search engine said. Google, in a report on political advertisement across its platforms - Google, YouTube and partner properties, said Rs 3.76 crore was spent by advertisers since February 19. "Our goal is to provide greater transparency in political advertising on Google, YouTube, and partner properties. This report includes information about Lok Sabha election ads that feature or are run by a political party, a political candidate, or a current member of the Lok Sabha," it said. Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP was the biggest ad spender with a total expenditure of Rs 1.48 crore.
