Ride-hailing app Uber has announced a comprehensive global revamp of its app, adding a host of new features, according to a statement. Uber said the new updated app makes it easier to book rides, taking into account most preferred destinations and products for each rider. Uber's redesigned app has been made intuitive, customised to the individual preferences of each rider, offering easy access to various services, consistent experiences, and smooth flows through the booking process, it further said. Internet players' industry body IAMAI on Tuesday requested the Delhi government to engage with all stakeholders in the taxi segment before taking any coercive action in view of the ban on bike taxis. The transport department has cautioned bike taxis against plying on the roads of Delhi, warning that it was a violation of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, that would make aggregators liable for a fine of Rs 1 lakh. The use of two-wheelers having a private registration mark for commercial purposes is in violation of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The first offence could lead to a fine of Rs 5,000 while a second offence could incur a Rs 10,000 fine and imprisonment of up to a year, the department said in a public notice. Observing that no person including digital intermediaries can continue as an aggregator in the absence of a license, the Supreme Court on Monday asked Uber India to apply for it with transport authorities for continuing its services in Maharashtra. The top court took serious note of the non-framing of rules for public transport aggregators under the Motor Vehicles Act by the Maharashtra government, saying the state should not dither as indecision leads to uncertainty in the business of aggregators. The Bombay High Court, on March 7, last year, had ordered that app-based taxi firms such as Ola and Uber cannot operate in Maharashtra without valid licences and directed all such aggregators to apply for valid licences if they wished to continue operations.
