About 100 quintals of illegal firecrackers worth over Rs 50 lakh have been seized and six persons arrested after an explosion triggered by illegal storage of crackers left eight people injured in a market here, police said on Friday. Kanpur blast due to illegal firecrackers storage, no terror links: Police

The massive explosion in the congested Mishri Bazaar near a mosque here was caused due to illegal firecracker storage, and not because of scooter explosion which was initially suggested as the reason for the incident, top police brass confirmed on Thursday. In a press conference, the Kanpur Police also denied links to any terrorist activity in the explosions. The CCTV footage reviewed by investigators revealed that the blast was triggered by a cardboard box kept outside a toy shop, not by any vehicles. It occurred in front a toy shop on the Meston Road, damaging two parked scooters and nearby shops and injuring at least eight people. Commissioner of Police (Kanpur) Raghubir Lal confirmed that the explosion was purely accidental and caused by illegal stocking of fireworks. "No evidence of any terrorist organisation or extremist involvement has been found. This was an accident caused by illegal firecracker storage," he said. "We have categorically dismissed the claims falsely linkin

4 more held for Dalit man's lynching in Raebareli under Gangster Act, NSA

Police have arrested four more persons in connection with the lynching of a Dalit man by villagers who mistook him for a thief in the Unchahar area of Raebareli district, officials said on Wednesday. Police said the stringent Gangsters Act and the National Security Act (NSA) will be invoked against the accused, and cautioned against attempts to give the incident a casteist slant, saying the accused were unaware of the victim's caste. While the NSA empowers states to detain individuals to prevent them from acting in a manner "prejudicial to the defence of India" with a maximum detention period of 12 months, which can be revoked earlier, the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986, is aimed at combating organised crime by making special provisions to deal with gangsters and anti-social activities. Hariom Valmiki (40) was reportedly lynched by villagers who mistook him for a thief during a night vigil at about 1 am on October 2 amid rumours that a gang

NCRB data shows lower crime rate than national average in UP: State Police

Despite Uttar Pradesh having the highest population in the country, the crime rate in the state in 2023 stood at 181.3, much below the national crime rate of 270.3, the state police said on Wednesday, quoting the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. Uttar Pradesh accounts for 16.98 per cent of the total population in the country. Crime rate, defined as the number of crimes per one lakh population, is considered the most reliable indicator for assessing a state's law and order situation, as it adjusts for population size and growth, the state police said in a statement. An analysis showed that Uttar Pradesh ranks favourably across various crime heads. For total crimes reported under the Indian Penal Code, the state was placed 20th among the 28 states and eight Union Territories. It was placed 29th in the number of 'murder' cases reported, with a crime rate of 1.4 against the national crime rate of 2. The state stood 30th in 'attempt to murder' cases with a crime rate o

UP police detain cleric Tauqeer Raza after Bareilly protest turns violent

Police on Saturday detained Tauqeer Raza Khan, a local cleric and chief of Ittehad-e-Millat Council, whose call for a protest supporting the 'I love Muhammad' campaign led to a violent clash between demonstrators and police after Friday prayers in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly, officials said on Saturday. Tauqeer Raza has been taken into custody, and further legal proceedings are underway. The situation is peaceful and under control, Bareilly SSP Anurag Arya told the media. The detention followed a day of tension in Bareilly where a large crowd carrying I Love Muhammad' posters clashed with police outside a mosque in the Kotwali area after Friday prayers. The crowd was reportedly angry over the last-minute cancellation of a proposed demonstration called by Raza, who claimed the authorities denied permission for it. Over two dozen people were detained following the clash, which saw stone-pelting and vandalism. According to police sources, Raza released a video statement on Friday night

After Allahabad High Court's directives, the Uttar Pradesh government has issued a circular restraining police from directly contacting parties and lawyers in pending matters. Mayawati slams UP govt for hyping routine police recruitment drive

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Wednesday criticised the Uttar Pradesh government over the recently held police recruitment drive, calling it a routine exercise that was unnecessarily hyped. She questioned whether all communities received fair representation and raised concerns over the quality and the future of the training being provided to the recruits. "The recent police recruitment in UP has been portrayed as if something extraordinary has been achieved, while in reality, such recruitment drives are part of routine administrative work to prevent backlog in the police department," Mayawati said in a post in Hindi on X. The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister asserted that the real concern among people is whether proper representation was given to 'Sarv Samaj' or all sections in the recruitment and whether the recruits would receive appropriate training. Citing the achievements during her tenure, Mayawati said, "During my government, to ensure the rule of law and ...
