Connect third engine to double-engine for fast development: UP CM to voters

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday asked the voters to support the BJP in the civic polls, saying this election is for connecting a third engine to the "double-engine" government so that the development work can be done at the "speed of a bullet train". Adityanath also asserted that there is no place for a person in UP today who even sympathizes with criminals, and that the state is now being identified by its grand festivals and not for the mafia. Adityanath made the remarks while addressing public meetings in Saharanpur, Shamli and Amroha to seek votes for his party in the urban local body elections. Kicking off an election campaign from Saharanpur, he spoke about the achievements of his government and charged that earlier governments were busy instigating riots. Amidst a loud applause from locals, the chief minister said Uttar Pradesh is not anyone's property and that extortion will not be allowed. "Before 2017, the governments here did not have time for ...

Atiq murder shameful, doubt if people will get answers on incident: Sibal

The killing of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf in Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh while in the custody of the police was shameful and it was doubtful if people would ever get answers on the incident, former Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal said here on Sunday. Atiq and Ashraf were killed in Prayagraj late night on April 15 by three men posing as journalists when police personnel were taking them to a hospital for a health check-up. They had been arrested for the February 24 murder of Umesh Pal, the key witness in the 2005 murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal. "What was the emergency that both of them had to be taken handcuffed for a medical check up so late at night, that too on foot? How did the media know about the hospital visit? If the three accused did not know each other, how come they reached there at the same time? There are questions that are being raised," Sibal said. Talking to media at the Indore Press Club, Sibal said, "It is doubtful the ..

'Atiq-Ashraf killing shows intelligence failure, collapse of law and order'

Samajwadi Party national general secretary Shivpal Singh Yadav on Thursday said incidents such as the killing of Atiq Ahmad and his brother in the presence of policemen show an intelligence failure and the collapse of law and order in the state. "The FIR against Atiq was lodged in the SP regime and he was also sent to prison. Under this government, assailants killed them (Atiq-Ashraf) in the presence of police force. How did they muster the courage," he told reporters here. "Government intelligence totally failed. Law and order has collapsed totally. To punish someone is the work of the court. If encounters happen like this in Uttar Pradesh, what will be the significance of the courts," the SP leader questioned. On the urban local body polls in the state, Yadav said he has appealed to the Election Commission to ensure that the elections are not affected by police and other officers, and that the process is kept free and fair. He said the SP would contest the polls with its full ...
