The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday told the Allahabad High Court that it is complying with the 'triple test' formula suggested by the Supreme Court to provide OBC reservation in urban local body (ULB) elections. After hearing the arguments of the state government and the petitioners on the matter related to the OBC quota in ULB polls, the Lucknow bench of the high court placed the case for next hearing on Wednesday and also extended the stay on issuing notification for elections till then. A bench of Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Saurabh Lavania passed the order on a bunch of pleas led by Vaibhav Pandey's PIL. On the government's argument, the bench said, "We are in disagreement that the state's mechanism is as good as the triple test formula. We thought that better senses would prevail on the state, commented the bench, expecting that the state government should have said by itself that it would abide by the Supreme Court direction, establishing a "dedicated commission"
Due to rising fog-related accidents, Uttar Pradesh government buses will stop plying at night, Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh said on Tuesday. Three people were killed and 39 injured in separate accidents amid low visibility due to dense fog in different districts of Uttar Pradesh, police said on Tuesday. "Due to dense fog and rising mishaps, the government has stopped plying of Uttar Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) buses at night. An order has been issued in this regard to regional managers of the corporation," Singh told reporters on sidelines of a programme. He, however, did not elaborate on the new timings of buses. The meteorological office in Lucknow said dense fog is likely to continue for two more days.

Sugar production has increased 5 per cent to 82.1 lakh tonnes between October 1 and December 15 period of this marketing year, while mills have contracted to export 45-50 lakh tonnes of sweetener, industry body ISMA said on Monday. Sugar marketing year runs from October to September. The production of sugar stood at 77.9 lakh tonnes in the corresponding period of the 2021-22 marketing year. "As per port information and market reports, about 45-50 lakh tonnes of contracts for export of sugar have already been entered into so far. Out of that, about 6 lakh tonnes of sugar have been physically exported out of the country up to 30th November," Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) said in a statement. Market reports suggest that another 8-9 lakh tonnes of sugar is in pipeline to be exported in December, thereby total exports by the end of this month could be around 15 lakh tonnes. The inmates of the Fatehgarh district jail in Farrukhabad here are being trained in block printing to make 'Om Namah Shivay' and 'Radhe-Radhe' printed scarves and stoles for sale at religious places across the state. The training is being provided under the BJP government's one district, one product' (ODOP) scheme. Under the training, the jail inmates are being trained to create 'Ramnami patkas', 'dupattas', and 'gamchas' using the block printing technique. A total of 86 state government employees here have been issued show-cause notices by authorities for being absent from election duty during the recent by-polls in Khatauli. On December 5, voting took place in the Khatauli Assembly constituencies and the results were declared on December 8. Sandeep Bhagiya, the Chief Development Officer (CDO), who was also the in-charge of the election duty told reporters on Wednesday that the show cause notices have been issued against 86 employees who were found absent from the poll duty. They have been asked to respond for the same till December 21. The employees were found absent at the time of dispatching of the polling parties on December 4, a day before polling. "Departmental action, including adverse entry and salary deduction, will be ordered against them in absence of suitable response," the CDO said.

UP's Minister of State for Transport Dayashankar Singh has said that the state government will provide jobs and employment to newly married couples according to their merit. Dayashankar Singh on Wednesday addressed a mass marriage ceremony organised by the Social Welfare department under Chief Minister's Mass Marriage Scheme at Bansdih PG College in the district. "The marriage of young men and women from poor families is being done under the Chief Minister's Mass Marriage Scheme. After the mass marriage, the government will give jobs and employment to these newly married couples according to their merit," Singh said. The Uttar Pradesh government has installed about 5,000 CCTVs in 16 cities with a view to ensure people's safety, officials said here on Thursday. Every intersection, major roads, expressways, railways, and metro stations are covered under these cameras, they said. The exercise has been undertaken to achieve the government's goal of creating safe and smart cities through an Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC).
