Rains accompanied by hailstorm and lightning lashed some parts of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, leaving five persons dead in Firozabad, Siddharth Nagar and Sitapur districts, officials said. State capital Lucknow was among the places, which received rains. Firozabad Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Vishu Raja said that two people were killed due to lightning in the district. A 30-year-old pregnant woman Lalita Devi was killed after being struck by lightning in Daulatpur village of Narkhi area, while a 32-year-old man identified as Padav Veer Singh was killed in Chinari village of Jasrana area. The ADM said the family members of the deceased will be given financial assistance. Ghanshyam (40), a labourer, died after being struck by lightning in Siddharthnagar. Security was tightened in the Nai Sadak area here over claims that a Ram Navami procession was pelted with stones on Sunday evening. Police, however, termed it a rumour and asserted that the situation was under control. Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), Shrawan Kumar Singh, said that a written complaint was received from the organisers of the 'Shobha Yatra' alleging that stones were thrown from rooftops of buildings near Nai Sadak, close to Chandreshwar Hata, while the procession was returning. Police said a purported video of some people fleeing from the area triggered the rumour. As per the complaint, trouble erupted after devotees were pelted with stones from buildings when the procession was returning after the 'Shobha Yatra', the DCP said. However, the officer added, "Prima facie it appears to be a rumour, as no one has been hit by bricks or stones." The state's Bundelkhand region, which covers seven districts of Jhansi and Chitrakootdham division, will bear the brunt of the heatwaves, posing significant risks to both human and animal health, weather officials said. "During these months, above-normal maximum temperatures are expected across Uttar Pradesh. The forecast indicates that daytime temperatures will consistently exceed the 40-degree Celsius mark," Atul Kumar Singh, a MeT official here, said. Authorities here have issued notices to 300 people for protesting against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, by wearing black badges during Friday prayers in mosques and asked them to furnish bonds of Rs 2 lakh each, a police official said on Sunday. The figure stood at 24 till Saturday. Superintendent of Police (City) Satyanarayan Prajapat said notices were served to 300 people after identifying them through CCTV footage. Efforts are on to identify more people, according to police. Prajapat told reporters on Saturday that notices had been issued against 24 people. The notices were issued by City Magistrate Vikas Kashyap based on the police report, asking the protesters to furnish a bond of Rs 2 lakh each after appearing before court on April 16. Those who have been served notices wore black badges on their arms during Friday prayers at different mosques here on March 28 to protest against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, according to police. Security was tightened at sensitive locations of Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar as a precautionary measure, following the tabling of the Waqf Bill in Parliament on Wednesday, officials said. A flag march led by District Magistrate Umesh Mishra and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Abhishek Singh was conducted by the district administration in sensitive areas. The hearing on the bail plea of Zafar Ali, the president of Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal, was postponed to April 4 due to the unavailability of the case diary, a lawyer said on Wednesday. Ali was arrested on March 23, and his bail plea was initially set for hearing on March 27. However, ADJ-II court of judge Nirbhay Narayan Rai in Chandausi refused him interim bail and set April 2 as the date for hearing his regular bail application. Additional district government advocate Hariom Prakash Saini said, "During today's hearing, the defense counsel requested interim bail for Zafar Ali, citing the absence of the case diary. However, I argued that his interim bail had already been rejected earlier, and therefore, the plea should be dismissed again. The court accepted this argument and dismissed the interim bail application." The court then directed the prosecution to present the case diary on April 4.
