The Ministry of Home Affairs has conveyed to the Delhi High Court that it, along with the Ministry of Defence, will abide by any decision of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on the dual control over the Assam Rifles. In an affidavit filed to the Delhi High Court, the MHA has conveyed that the Union Home Secretary had held a meeting with the Defence Secretary on April 4 to discuss the issue. Assam Riffles, the 184-year-old paramilitary force of the country, is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) while the operational control lies with the Ministry of Defence (MoD). The meeting discussed about a note moved by the MHA for the CCS on March 20 for resolving the issue of dual control over Assam Rifles. The CCS is chaired by the Prime Minister and comprises the Minister of External Affairs, the Home minister, the Finance minister and the Defence minister. Three Maoists and a CRPF jawan were killed in an encounter in Jharkhand's Giridih district on Monday, officials said. They said the encounter between the two sides took place around 6 am in the forests of Belbha Ghat area of the district when troops of the 7th battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were undertaking an anti-Naxal operation. The district is about 185 kms from state capital Ranchi. Three bodies of Maoists along with an AK-47 Rifle, three magazines and four pipe bombs have been recovered from the encounter site till now, the officials said. CRPF constable Biswajit Chauhan was also killed in the encounter, they added. The constable hailed from Udalguri district of Assam. The force is looking for more recoveries and a search is being conducted in the encounter area, they said. Jharkhand will go to polls in the final four phases of the seven-phase Lok Sabha election.
A policeman was Monday injured, and his rifle looted, after Naxals attacked him with sharp-edged weapons in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, police said. The incident took placeat 1:30 am when constable Venkat Rao Majji was on night patrol at a five-day Ram Navami fair in Madded town in the district, a local police official said. "Some Naxals attacked the constable in the dark with sharp-edged weapons when he was talking on the phone. Before the other security personnel there could react, the ultras looted his self-loading rifle and fled," the official said. "The injured constable was rushed to a local hospital and then shifted to Bijapur town for further treatment. Efforts are on to nab the attackers," he said.
