Malaysia deports 7 for alleged ties to terrorist group

Malaysian police say six Egyptians and a Tunisian man believed to be linked to an African-based terror group have been detained and deported. National police chief Mohamad Fuzi Harun says one of the Egyptians and the Tunisian national are suspected members of Ansar Al-Sharia Al-Tunisia, which is based in North Africa and listed as a terrorist group by the UN. Fuzi said in a statement Sunday the two were detained in 2016 for trying to illegally enter an African country. He said they used fake passports to enter Malaysia in October last year and were planning to sneak into a third country to launch attacks. Fuzi said five other Egyptians and two Malaysians were detained last month for providing food, shelter, air tickets and employment for the two suspected terrorists.

'You hunted the hunter': IAF praises Wing Commander Abhinandan

Continuing with its poetic praise on its personnel, the Indian Air Force on Sunday described Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman as someone who "hunted the hunter". Posting a poem on its official Twitter handle @IAF_MCC, 'Sabke Bass Ki Baat Nahi', written by Bipin Allhabadi, the IAF described the fighter pilot's feat as something that is not possible for everyone. What Abhinandan Varthaman did is not everyone's cup of tea. He hunted the hunter, the Hindi poem read. Tensions between India and Pakistan flared up after a suicide bomber of Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror group killed 40 Central Reserve Police Force personnel in Kashmir's Pulwama district on February 14. India launched a counter-terror operation in Balakot on February 26. The next day, Pakistan Air Force retaliated and downed a MiG-21 and captured Varthaman. However, in the air fight, the Air Force pilot had also shot down Pakistan's F-16 fighter jet. After his capture and subsequent release, the Air Force ...

Lesser-known Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist Mudasir Ahmed Khan, alias 'Mohd Bhai', has been identified as the brains behind the audacious terror strike in Pulwama that left 40 CRPF personnel dead on February 14, officials said on Sunday. Piecing together evidence gathered so far, security officials said that 23-year-old Khan, an electrician with a graduate degree hailing from Pulwama district, arranged the vehicle and explosives used in the terror strike. A resident of Mir Mohalla of Tral, Khan joined the Jaish-e-Mohammed sometime in 2017 as an overground worker and was later drawn into the JeM fold by Noor Mohammed Tantrey, alias 'Noor Trali', who is believed to have helped in the revival of the terror outfit in Kashmir Valley. After Tantray was killed in December 2017, Khan disappeared from his home on January 14, 2018 and has been active since then. Chhattisgarh police personnel to get weekly-off

Police personnel in Chhattisgarh will now get regular weekly-offs, a move that will come as a relief to them and their families in view of their long and erratic working hours. Till now, the policemen were getting a yearly special leave (around 40 to 45 days), but now, as per an order issued by Director General of Police D M Awasthi on Saturday, all personnel -- from constable to inspector ranks -- will be given one day leave every week. "The decision was taken in view of the difficult nature of their job and severe work pressure," an official here said Sunday. In case of VVIP movement or emergency circumstances, if the weekly-off is not granted then the policeman would be entitled to get the pending leave later within the same month, he said. As per the order, the personnel posted in Naxal-hit areas will be collectively given eight-day leave within a stretch of three months. However, the weekly-offs could also be cancelled due to security reasons and it would be the ...

Enough is enough, we cannot keep suffering till eternity: PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday issued a stern warning to terrorist forces targeting India, saying the country cannot keep suffering forever. "Enough is enough," he said, while referring to the terror attacks in Pulwama and Uri. "We cannot keep suffering till eternity." Addressing the 50th raising day of the Central Industrial Security Force as the Chief Guest here, Modi said the role of security forces like the CISF becomes very significant when the nation faces a hostile neighbour, and when some elements hatching conspiracy within the country get encouragement from across the border. "When the neighbour is very hostile but does not have the capability to fight a war and various conspiracies hatched within the country are getting encouragement from across the border and when the ghastly pictures of terror come to light, under such difficult situations, (ensuring) security of the country and its institutions becomes very challenging," the PM said. In an indirect reference to the ..

Sudan court sentences 9 women protesters to flogging: lawyers

A Sudanese emergency court on Saturday sentenced nine women protesters to 20 lashes each for participating in an unauthorised demonstration against President Omar al-Bashir's rule, defence lawyers said. The ruling by the Khartoum court came despite Bashir on Friday ordering the release of all female detainees held during nationwide demonstrations that have rocked the country since December. The authorities have set up special emergency courts to investigate violations of a nationwide state of emergency imposed by Bashir on February 22 to end the demonstrations after an initial crackdown failed to suppress the protest movement. The nine women protesters were taken to court after they were arrested on Thursday for participating in a "banned demonstration" earlier that day in the capital's eastern district of Burri, a site of regular protests. "Nine women protesters have been sentenced to one month jail and 20 lashes," defence lawyer Enaam Atieg told AFP. "They have been taken to women's
