Roadside bomb kills 8 militia fighters north of Baghdad

An Iraqi security official says a roadside bomb has exploded north of Baghdad, killing eight fighters from a militia headed by an influential Shiite Muslim cleric. Thursday's ambush was confirmed by a spokesman with the Peace Brigades, or Saraya al-Salam militia, which is commanded by Muqtada al-Sadr. They both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media. The militia spokesman said among those killed was a militia commander, Hussein Attiyeh. The ambush occurred west of the holy city of Samarra, some 60 miles (96 kilometers) north of the capital Baghdad. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Al-Sadr's political coalition came first in last year's May elections.

Iran vows revenge on 'mercenaries' behind suicide attack

President Hassan Rouhani vowed revenge Thursday against the "mercenary group" behind a suicide bombing which killed 27 people in southeastern Iran and accused the US and Israel of supporting "terrorism". "We will certainly make this mercenary group pay for the blood of our martyrs," the official IRNA news agency quoted the Iranian president as saying in response to Wednesday's attack. Former Jammu and Kashmir chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti condemned the killing of at least 18 CRPF personnel in a terrorist attack in Pulwama district on Thursday. The CRPF personnel were killed when a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into the bus they were travelling in. "Terrible news coming from the valley. One PLFI ultra killed in encounter with security forces

One ultra of the banned Peoples Liberation Front of India (PLFI) was killed in an encounter with the security forces in Khunti district on Thursday, police said. The encounter took place at Merambir forest area of the district, Deputy Inspector General of Police, A V Homkar said. The security forces were on anti-naxal operation, the DIG said, adding that the body of the ultra was found in the encounter spot. The security forces also recovered an automatic rifle from the spot, the DIG added.

Afghan Taliban announce talks with US in Pakistan

The Taliban said Wednesday its negotiators would next week meet the top US and Pakistani officials including Prime Minister Imran Khan during a key round of talks in Islamabad as part of the ongoing Afghan peace talks. Neither Washington nor Islamabad immediately confirmed the announcement by the Taliban. On the "formal invitation of the government of Pakistan, another meeting is scheduled to take place between the negotiation teams of the Islamic Emirate and the US on 18th of February, 2019 in Islamabad," Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in a statement. Suicide attack on bus kills 27 Iran Revolutionary Guards

A suicide car bombing on a Revolutionary Guards bus in southeastern Iran killed 27 troops on Wednesday, in one of the deadliest attacks on the elite forces in years. Taliban announce talks with US in Islamabad: spokesman

Agreements approved with foreign govts in fields of space, tourism, counter-terrorism: Cabinet

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a series of agreements with foreign governments in the field of counter-terrorism, tourism and outer space. The Cabinet approved MoU between India and Morocco for setting up of a joint working group (JWG) on counter-terrorism. Setting up of the JWG would help cases relating to terrorist attacks. The MoU would be the basis for obtaining/ exchanging information on terrorist activities, an official statement said. Another agreement with Finland, relates to cooperation in the field of peaceful uses of outer space. The MoU has already been signed in January here. Two agreements with Argentina and Saudi Arabia were also cleared to promote tourism, the statement said.

Report: At least 20 Guard personnel killed in Iran bombing

A state-run news agency in Iran is reporting a suicide bombing in the country's southeast has killed at least 20 elite Revolutionary Guard personnel and wounded 20.
