California has fined Amazon a total of USD 5.9 million, alleging the e-commerce giant worked warehouse employees so hard that it put their safety at risk, officials said. The two citations issued in May by the California Labor Commissioner's Office said Amazon.com Services LLC ran afoul of the state's Warehouse Quota Law at facilities in Riverside and San Bernardino counties, east of Los Angeles. The law, which took effect in 2022, "requires warehouse employers to provide employees written notice of any quotas they must follow, including the number of tasks they need to perform per hour and any discipline that could come" from not meeting the requirements, the labour commissioner's office said in a statement. The Chennai facility is the company's second free trade warehouse zone (FTWZ) in India after Mumbai that was established 18 months old. Mahindra Logistics Limited (MLL) on Tuesday announced the construction of its warehousing facility in Phaltan, near Pune with an investment of Rs 170 crore. Spread over 6.5 lakh square feet (sq ft), the new facility will be developed in two phases. The first phase, comprising 3.5 lakh sq ft, is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2024, the company said in a statement. Mahindra Logistics will manage inbound logistics to manufacturing and distribution solutions of diverse clients in automotive and manufacturing sectors located in the region, the company said. The absorption of industrial and warehousing space stood at 20.9 million square feet in the same period last year. Tier I cities accounted for 75 per cent of the total absorption in the first half of 2023, while tier II and III contributed the remaining 25 per cent, the consultant highlighted. In a webinar, Knight Frank India on Tuesday released India Warehousing Market Report, which stated that the rentals rose 3-8 per cent across seven out of eight cities. Around 5,642 warehousing projects have been completed under the Warehouse Infrastructure Fund (WIF) scheme so far, Parliament was informed on Friday. Under the Warehouse Infrastructure Fund (WIF) scheme, under the Ministry of Finance, about Rs 9,393.68 crore funds have been sanctioned till December 2022 for establishment of 7,953 warehouse projects spread across 21 states, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha. The estimated storage capacity on completion of these projects will be 9.32 million tonnes, he said. Out of which, the cumulative disbursement of WIF loan till December 2022 was Rs 8,357 crore, as against the sanctions. "As on date, 5,642 projects have been completed," the Minister said.
