Enrolment of women in Indian universities grew 26% in 2024: Report

India is experiencing an encouraging increase in women's involvement in higher education, with their enrolment rising 26 per cent year-on-year in 2024, a recent study has revealed. In comparison, men's enrolment in Indian universities experienced 3.6 per cent growth during the same period. With this, the total student enrolment increased approximately 12 per cent from 2023 to 2024, according to a report by learning and employability solutions firm TeamLease Edtech. Women's participation in work-linked, work-integrated, and direct admission (DA) programmes more than doubled, showcasing a remarkable growth of over 124 per cent. Men's enrolment in these programmes also saw a substantial increase of roughly 66 per cent. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that he will hand over his various social media accounts to women achievers in different fields to mark the International Women's Day on March 8. In his monthly Mann Ki Baat address, he said these successful women in different fields will speak about their work and experience on his social media accounts. WCD gets hiked allocation of Rs 26,889 crore in Union Budget 2025

The Union Budget 2025-26 has allocated Rs 26,889.69 crore to the Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD), an increase from the revised estimate of Rs 23,182.98 crore in 2024-25. Of the entire outlay, one of the biggest allocations is for Saksham Anganwadi and POSHAN 2.0, which has received Rs 21,960 crore to combat malnutrition and strengthen early childhood care. The initiatives were allocated Rs 20,070.90 crore allocated in the revised estimates for 2024-25. The initiative, which also includes a Scheme for Adolescent Girls, has been restructured under three primary verticals nutrition support for children and adolescent girls, early childhood care and education, and Anganwadi infrastructure. Rs 21,000 cr given to women under Ladki Bahin scheme: Maharashtra governor

Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan on Sunday said 2.46 crore women have been provided a collective assistance of Rs 21,000 crore under the government's Ladki Bahin scheme. Addressing the Republic Day function at the Shivaji Park in Mumbai, the governor also said Maharashtra stands first in the country in attracting the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). "I appeal to all to resolve to form a new and strong Maharashtra. We must all work together to make our dream of one trillion dollar economy, a reality," he said. The Rural Development Ministry's tableau at the Republic Day parade paid tribute to the Lakhpati Didi scheme, which aims to ensure a minimum income of Rs 1 lakh to members of Self Help Groups, at the Kartavya Path, showcasing women's economic empowerment through entrepreneurship. Pak airstrikes kill 46 in Afghanistan; mostly women, children: Taliban

Pakistan's airstrikes on eastern Afghanistan killed 46 people, mostly women and children, a Taliban government official said Wednesday. Hamdullah Fitrat, the deputy spokesman for the Afghan government, said that six people were also wounded in the Paktika province bordering Pakistan. This comes a day after Pakistani security officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity in line with regulations, told The Associated Press that Tuesday's operation was to dismantle a training facility and kill insurgents in the province of Paktika in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, in a statement, Mohammad Khurasani, the spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban or Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, claimed that 50 people, including 27 women and children, have died in the strikes. Residents in the area told an AP reporter over the phone that at least 13 people were left dead, adding that the death toll could be higher.
