New Delhi, Jan 13 (ANI): Jawaharlal Nehru University Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar on January 13 said that the first day of winter semester has started and more than 50 per cent of the students have paid their hostel dues. "The first day of winter semester has started and more than 50% of the students have paid their hostel dues and registered. Classes have begun. Appeal to all students to register else it will lead to loss of one academic year," said Kumar.

Acid attack victims will receive monthly pension up to Rs 10,000: Uttarakhand minister

Dehradun (Uttarakhand), Jan 13 (ANI): Uttarakhand Women's Welfare and Child Development Rekha Arya spoke on proposal of pension scheme for acid attack victims. She said, "We have a proposal to provide a pension between Rs 7,000 to Rs 10,000 per month to acid attack victims to help them be independent and financially strong." "With this initiative, I believe that their life will be better. This will soon come into effect," she added.

Equity indices end at record closing highs, realty and IT stocks gain

New Delhi, Jan 13 (ANI): Equity benchmark indices hit fresh lifetime highs on Monday as global investors awaited US President Donald Trump and Chinese officials to sign the long awaited phase one trade deal later this week. The BSE S-P Sensex closed 260 points or 0.62 per cent higher at 41,860 while the Nifty 50 moved up by 73 points at 12,330. All sectoral indices at the National Stock Exchange were in the green with Nifty realty ticking up by 2 per cent, IT by 1.6 per cent, metal by 1.2 per cent and FMCG by 1.1 per cent. Among stocks, Infosys rose by 4.65 per cent to Rs 772.50 per share after the IT major reported 11 per cent jump in consolidated net profit for the quarter ended December 2019 (Q3 FY20) to Rs 4,457 crore from Rs 4,019 crore quarter-on-quarter due to higher other income and lower other expenses. The year-on-year profit growth was 23.5 per cent.

Adding to it, he challenged PM Modi to go any university, stand there without police and tell people what he's going to do for this country. He added, "Instead of addressing the problem of the youth Narendra Modi is trying to distract the nation and divide people. Voice of the youth is legitimate, it should not be suppressed, and the government should listen to it." "Narendra Modi should have courage to tell youngsters why Indian economy has become a disaster...He doesn't have guts to stand in front of students. I challenge him to go to any university, stand there without police and tell people what he's going to do for this country," he further added.

Latvian Foreign Minister pays floral tribute at Rajghat

New Delhi, Jan 13 (ANI): Foreign Minister of Latvia, Edgars Rinkevics, visited Rajghat and paid floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on January 13. People gear up to celebrate 'Pongal' with full fervour in Chennai

Chennai, Jan 13 (ANI): Ahead of the Pongal festival, people of Tamil Nadu's Chennai are gearing up to celebrate four-day long celebrations. Pongal is a harvest festival dedicated to the Sun God. Truckloads of sugarcanes and gingers were brought to Chennai's Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex. It is one of the most auspicious festivals of Tamilians which is mainly celebrated to offer prayers to the Sun God for a good harvest. Pongal coincides with 'Makar Sankranti' which is celebrated in North India and begins a day after Lohri every year. It marks the start of the Sun's six-month-long journey towards Uttarayanam.

JNU student secures 8th rank in IES Examination 2019

New Delhi, Jan 13 (ANI): Amid all the protests at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) over campus violence, a student from the varsity has secured 8th rank in Indian Economic Service (IES) Examination 2019. After her achievement, Yashaswini Saraswat on January 13 met JNU Vice Chancellor (VC) M Jagadesh Kumar at his office. Out of 32 qualified candidates, 18 belong to JNU. Her Area of research was Environmental Economics.

Jamia VC confirms varsity to file FIR against Delhi Police over 'unpermitted entry'

New Delhi, Jan 13 (ANI): Jamia Millia Islamia Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar came out to speak to students who were staging protest outside her office. Addressing the gathering, VC Najma Akhtar said that FIR against crackdown by Delhi Police inside varsity campus will begin tomorrow. She said, "Delhi Police entered the campus without permission and the process of filing an FIR against Delhi Police will begin from tomorrow." Delhi Police had entered the campus of Jamia on December 15 while chasing the protesters who were demonstrating against Citizenship Amendment Act and the proposed all-India NRC. Police had also fired tear gases at the students. Police crackdown in Jamia resulted in vehement students and citizens' protest across the country.

'Nothing superstitious about it': Yashomati Thakur on her 'cow' remark

She said, "All farmers pet their cows and bulls lovingly. There's nothing superstitious about it. I don't understand why it is being taken otherwise. I belong to Congress and believe in 'sarvdharm'. I am a Hindu but I also go to 'dargah'." Earlier on January 11, Thakur had claimed that touching cows drives away the negativity in us. Health check-up of bull tamers held in Madurai ahead of 'Jallikattu'

Madurai (Tamil Nadu), Jan 13 (ANI): People of Tamil Nadu's Madurai are gearing up to celebrate the traditional bull-taming sport 'Jallikattu'. Health check-up was held for bull catchers in Madurai on January 13. Tamers are very excited to participate in the sport. Jallikattu is the world famous cultural competition of Tamil Nadu which is celebrated on Pongal. This year over 500 bull tamers have enrolled themselves in the competition in Madurai. The Supreme Court (SC) in 2014 banned 'Jallikattu' after a plea was filed by the Animal Welfare Board of India and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) but the state government insisted Jallikattu was a crucial part of its culture and identity. The ban was later lifted in January 2017 with an amendment to the law after massive protests along the Marina beach in Chennai.

RSS protests against 'illegal' construction of Jesus Christ statue in Karnataka

People injured in Agra bus accident are safe: DM

Agra (Uttar Pradesh), Jan 13 (ANI): Two died after a bus rolled over on Agra-Lucknow Expressway due to low visibility near Fatehabad on January 13. Injured were taken to hospital. Speaking on the incident, District Magistrate (DM) of Agra Prabhu Narain Singh told, "Bus was going towards Lucknow. In order to save a truck, the bus rolled over on the highway. Unfortunately, two people died on the spot. Police reached at the spot and injured were sent to hospital. No one is seriously injured as of now. We are monitoring the status."

Lava gushes out of Taal Volcano in Philippines, 286 flights cancelled
