New Delhi, Sept 17 (ANI): The death toll in Hurricane Florence that struck last week rose to 14, as torrential rains and heavy flooding continued to batter North Carolina and South Carolina states. Earlier, the death toll stood at eight. Currently, the storm is travelling westwards at 13 kph setting its sights on Charlotte in North Carolina, with winds measuring 61 kph. Weather forecasters have repeatedly warned of flash flooding in the Carolinas, although Florence has been downgraded into a tropical depression. More than 30 inches of rain pounded on North Carolina, which is a record, according to the National Hurricane Center. Other places have seen over 20 inches of rainfall so far, with more in the offing over the next few days.

Lahore (Pakistan), Sep 16 (ANI): Protest broke out in Lahore against the illegal arrest of Gilgit-Baltistan activists, Asif Naji and Shabbir Mayar, on September 15. The protest saw hundreds of protestors taking to streets in wake of the illegal arrests of activists. They shouted anti-Pakistan slogans demanding their immediate release. The activists were arrested by law enforcement agencies under draconian Schedule IV of Anti Terrorism Act (ATA). The Act has repeatedly been misused to implicate the common citizens and stifle the occupied territory of Gilgit-Baltistan. The activists had become the prominent voices of the region who would lead movements of resistance against Islamabad oppression.

Geneva, Switzerland, Sep 15 (ANI): Dr Lakhu Luhana, General Secretary of World Sindhi Congress, slammed Pakistan for human rights violation in Sindh at the 39th session of the Human Rights Council at United Nations headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Hanoi (Vietnam), Sep 13 (ANI): In Vietnam, there is still considerable amount of soil contaminated by the dioxin-containing defoliants sprayed by the U.S. Army during Vietnam War. There are 28 highly contaminated areas in Vietnam, including Da Nang, Bien Hoa, Phu Cat Air Bases that were former U.S. army bases. Japan's Shimizu Corporation announced start of verification testing project of field trial jointly with Vietnamese Government for full-scale soil washing for remediation of dioxin-contaminated soils. Soil washing is low-cost soil remediation technology that has low environmental impact. Shimizu's soil washing is expected to remove more than 90 percent of dioxin contaminants from soils and to restore close to 70 percent of the contaminated soil to a reusable condition. During verification testing, contaminated soil collected from around the air base will be run through its soil washing plant, with the goal of removing 95% of dioxin contaminants. New Delhi, Sep 13 (ANI): Myanmar government granted permission to the United Nations (UN) inspection teams to assess dozens villages and townships in the country's Rakhine State, that were home to hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims till last year. A total of four teams from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and UN Development Programme (UNDP) will spend two weeks in the northern state where the Rohingya Muslims were allegedly murdered and subjected to imprisonment and sexual violence at the hands of the Myanmar military. However, the country's military, who is known as the Tatmadaw, has repeatedly denied the mounting allegations. According to UN spokesman Aoife McDonnell, the Myanmar government gave UN teams permission to assess 23 individual villages and three other village wards at the weekend, while, the Inspectors began their initial work.
