Two persons have died following a fire incident at the Reliance Industries Ltd's (RIL) refinery located in Jamnagar district of Gujarat, district police officials said on Friday.

The incident took place in the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) of the refinery, they said, adding that maintenance work was on in the unit and was shutdown for the purpose.

According to the Jamnagar police, when the fire broke out one out of the two persons who were doing maintenance in the CDU fell down from a height and died on the spot, while the other sustained burn injuries and was admitted to the hospital. However, the person succumbed to his injuries late Thursday night during treatment, police added.

The two persons were employed by a private contractor who was assigned the work of maintenance, police said. The reason for fire is unknown, they added.

An RIL spokesperson when asked about the incident said, "A small fire took place at the CDU of the refinery on Thursday, which was immediately contained. There was no production loss as the unit was already under shutdown for maintenance." He further said, "There was no damage to the machinery." The unit is likely to commence operations in next couple of days, he added.

Meanwhile, police has registered a case of accident and is further investigating it.
