| Experts urge for GM-free Karnataka | 12-NOV-09 |
|
| “We do not want GM (genetically modified) crops which can prove apocalyptic for mankind. Let us say never to Bt-brinjal”. The declaration, along with the demand that state government declare Karnataka GM-free, was made at a state-level conference on genetic engineering, farming and food in Mysore on Saturday. |

| Genes in a twist | 30-OCT-09 |
|
| It can be no one’s case that the greatest of caution should not be used while evaluating the safety of genetically modified (GM) crops or that we be blinded to the impact of these crops on reducing bio-diversity. But there has to be a limit to everything. Nine years after the gene-altered brinjal was first developed, and after over five years of the country’s biotech regulator scrutinising test reports of field trials, Bt-brinjal is still far from being commercialised. Bt-brinjal, which carries the insect-killer gene, cry1Ac, borrowed from a common soil bacteria (Bacillus thuringiensis,Bt) has been cleared by the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC), the apex body for approving GM products. However, under pressure from the anti-biotech lobby, the environment ministry wants a fresh public debate on Bt-brinjal before finally approving it. |

| 'GM food can cause the biggest health crisis' | 17-JUL-09 |
|
| For a country that doesn’t take much interest in scientists, Gilles-Eric Seralini is probably as well known as a scientist can get in India. Seralini is professor of molecular biology at the University of Caen in France, and he hit the headlines here early in 2009 when his analysis of the research data on the country’s first transgenic vegetable, the Bt brinjal, was presented to the Supreme Court of India. That’s when all hell broke loose. |

| Ready for Bt-brinjal | 25-MAY-09 |
|
| Amidst unrelenting opposition from environmentalists and consumer activists, the gene-altered hybrid of a widely consumed vegetable, the brinjal or egg plant, developed by the Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company (Mahyco), seems set to get the government’s approval for commercial cultivation. |

| Editorial: Dealing with GM foods | 18-JUL-08 |

More often than not, discussions about India's policy on genetically modified (GM) crops result in the point being made about how slow the entire process of clearances by the Genetic Engineering Approvals Committee (GEAC) is. |
