Highway to go

LET'S TORQUE

Srinivas Krishnan Mumbai
Sorry to remind you about something that you wouldn't have dwelt too much time on, something you would have forgotten about already.

As recent as last week, we read that two whole families met with death on our highways. I am reminding you about things unpleasant because, God forbid, the news report could have been about you and your family.

All of us know that our roads and highways are dangerous, and that India accounts for a disproportionate amount of deaths due to road accidents.

While we can always blame the infrastructure (rather, the lack of it) and other road users, it's important that we take care when we head out on the highways with our families. There is no limit to the precautions you can take, but here are some basic things to remember before you start off on your road trip.

  • Preferably take a modern car equipped with active and passive safety systems

  • Ensure your car is up for a long, highway drive. Have it serviced and checked

  • Never overload it with people or luggage

  • Understand your limits and your car's

  • Don't take any risks while driving. It's not worth it

  • Ensure that everyone's belted up

  • Be alert at all times when you are behind the wheel

  • Don't drive for more than three hours at a stretch. Take a break or give someone else the driving duties

  • If you are feeling sleepy, don't fight it. Pull over to the side and grab some shut-eye

  • Slow down when you pass through towns and villages

  • As far as possible, avoid driving during dusk and at night
  •
Of course this list is not exhaustive, but following these simple rules could mean a difference between life and death. Please.
