KG Denim plans to set up fashion designing centre

Gayathri G Chennai/ Coimbatore
K G Denim Limited, which owns the brand 'Trigger', is planning to set up a fashion design centre.

To be set up at an investment of Rs 1 crore over 5,000 sq ft on the company's factory premises itself (at Jadayampalayam on the outskirts of the city), the centre is expected to become operational in six months.

Speaking to Business Standard, K G Baalakrishnan, chairman, K G Denim Limited, said that fashion designers from abroad, especially from Italy, would visit the centre once in a month and innovate designs and techniques that would be incorporated in the production of garments under the brand 'Trigger'. "This move will help us gain more customers and enter new markets," he added.

As part of strengthening its presence in the jeans segment, the company underwent a restructuring last year.

As per this, its denimwear business was brought under the fold of Trigger Jeans Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of K G Denim Limited. The company's subsidiary in the US would become operational by September 2006.

"2005 has been a year of consolidation for us, and 2006 will see lot of expansion activities," N Rajhagopalan, vice-president (Finance), K G Denim Limited, said.

The company is planning to set up around 120 exclusive brand outlets (EBOs) in the Northern and Western parts of the country by the end of the current financial year.

K G Denim Limited is also planning to ramp up its production capacity by 30 per cent from the present 2.5 lakh pieces per month, by the end of 2007. It is also setting up a laundry wash facility with Italian collaboration which is likely to handle 5,000 units a day.

"The unit would be ready in another two months and would eventually double the company's handling capacity in one year," Rajhagopalan added.

Outlining the company's future plans, Baalakrishnan said that K G Denim Limited aims at producing one million pieces a month in the next two to three years.

Of the total production, 60 per cent is being exported to all over Europe and countries like USA, Mexico and Turkey.

The company also intends to diversify its product range by introducing casual shirts and womenswear in the next year.
