Samsung bets big on fully automatic washing machines

The company will produce 50,000 units of drum washing machines annually at its Chennai plant. Currently, it has an annual production capacity of 5 lakh semi-and fully-automatic washing machines at its Noida unit.  Samsung is aiming at 28.5 per cent share in the washing machine markets this year against the current share of 12.2 per cent.  The company executives maintain that the leap in market share would be achieved through introduction of new products, especially fully-automatic machines, and increasing the channel penetration for home appliances.  Samsung has started focusing on the smaller markets as a part of its corporate strategy and plans to widen the channel penetration from 28 per cent to 40 per cent.  The appliances manufacturers have started focusing on the niche segment of front-load washing machines, which is attracting high networth customers.  Earlier, Business Standard reported that another Korean giant LG Electronics is also mulling over setting up a manufacturing unit for its front-load fully-automatic washing machines in the country.  Currently, the front-load machines are priced at a premium than the conventional top- load automatic washing machines.  A recent survey conducted by Ficci suggests that this year the fully-automatic washing machines are expected to register 35 per cent growth against 20 per cent expected growth for the semi-automatic machines.  Last year, Samsung beefed up its refrigeration manufacturing capacity to 1.4 million units from 0.8 million units. It intends to capture 22 per cent market share in air conditioners, against 16.5 per cent last year.  Recently, R Zutshii, deputy managing director, Samsung India told Business Standard,
