Cbi Framing Rao In St Kitts Case, Says Counsel

Former Prime Minister P V Narasimha Raos counsel told a Delhi court yesterday that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was trying to make out a case against his client in the St Kitts forgery episode without placing any evidence on record.
Resuming his arguments against framing of charges against Rao in the CBI court of additional sessions judge Ajit Bharihoke, counsel R K Anand said, Not even any circumstantial evidence has been cited by the prosecution against his client either in connection with the alleged conspiracy to tarnish the image of former Prime Minister V P Singh or with the reported forgery of documents. While there was no reference to his clients name during the alleged conspiracy in mid-1989, when reports and denials about some secret bank account held by Ajeya Singh, son of V P Singh, appeared and a statement made in Parliament, the forgery was nothing but asking Indias consul-general in New York to attest a signature.
The signature was that of George McLean, managing director of the First Trust Corporation in which Ajeya Singh had allegedly operated a secret account involving $21 million.
