BS Reporter Chennai/ Bangalore

A professor from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has won recognition for his research in the art of organic chemistry.

Govindasamy Mugesh from the IISc, Bangalore, and Shuli You from Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, China, will each receive the ‘AstraZeneca Young Investigator Award’ for the Asian region. They will both be presented with a $50,000 unrestricted research grant to help their research programmes.

AstraZeneca, the biopharmaceutical company, on Tuesday recognised the winners of the AstraZeneca Excellence in Chemistry Awards 2011, Asian Region, which identifies innovative academic research.

Mugesh has been active in bio-organic chemistry research with a main focus on the chemistry and biology of medicinally-important metalloproteins and to develop novel synthetic methodologies for functionally mimicking the active site of these proteins. His group is also working on design and synthesis of novel compounds.

Shuli You is focused on pharmaceutical-related compounds.
