Mixed response to BJP`s strike call

BS Reporter New Delhi

In the national capital, major wholesale markets downed their shutters today. A large number of traders held a demonstration at Rajghat to protest against price rise as well as the court-ordered sealing of illegal commercial establishments in the city.

In Maharashtra, the BJP workers staged protests and formed human chains in Nagpur, Amravati, Akola, Washim, Nashik, Aurangabad and Pune, BJP spokesman Madhav Bhandari said.

According to the Chhattisgarh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, business to the tune of Rs 800 crore was affected due to the strike. Shops and business establishments remained closed in most parts of the state, but the buses and other modes of transportation plied as usual.

In the BJP bastion of Gujarat, the nationwide strike call evoked a mix response. In Ahmedabad, many shops and establishments in some of the city's main areas were functioning normally. However, traders in Rajkot supported the bandh by downing their shutters.

Rajasthan BJP BJP Secretary Srikisehn Songara claimed the bandh was a total success in the state with the business community shutting its establishments to protest the rising prices of essential commodities.

Reports coming from various parts of Rajasthan said there had been no major law and order problem anywhere.
