The public sector upstream major, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), has discovered commercial quantities of hydrocarbons six km east of its Bassein gas field.

According to the prognosis made by ONGC after drilling two exploratory wells in the offshore area, the discovery is expected to result in reserve accretion of about 67 million tonne of in-place hydrocarbons.

ONGC is learnt to be taking steps to bring this field into production in about three years. The strategy to drill more wells to realise the full potential of the structure is being finalised by ONGC officials.

The structured was discovered earlier this year but it was not known if the discovery was commercial. The delineation of the structure was taken on a war footing to hasten the evaluation of the structure.

The Bassein gas field is already supplying about 32 million cubic metres of gas per day to consumers in Hazira and those drawing their natural gas requirement from the HBJ pipeline.
