THIS WEEK: Internet usage in India

The Internet is the fastest-growing information and communication medium. Last year, it saw a 57 per cent growth over the previous year.

India has the fourth- highest number of Internet users in the world.

Percentage penetration is still low, but has increased significantly from 0.1 per cent in 1998 to 5.3 per cent in 2006.

The increase in Internet user base reached 72 million in 2006-07 and is expected to grow to 100 million by 2007-08.

Forty-nine per cent of the Net users are from outside the top eight metros.

E-commerce transactions touched Rs 2,210 crore in 2006-07.

Travel and e-ticketing, with 37 per cent share of the total online spending, is the most important e-commerce business in India.

There has been a drastic drop in broadband rates with monthly broadband subscriptions costing as low as Rs 200. The total broadband usage is growing at 20 per cent a month.
