Soymeal exports rise 14 per cent

Shipments to Vietnam and Japan grow at 52 per cent and 78 per cent respectively.
 
Soymeal exports recorded a 13.89 per cent growth in the first four months of the current oil year (October 2007-September 2008) on growing demand from consuming countries across the globe.
 
Total exports jumped to 19,77,628 tonnes in the period between October and January compared with 17,36,407 tonnes in the corresponding period last year.

According to data compiled by the Soybean Processors Association of India (SOPA), shipments to Vietnam and Japan grew at 51.66 per cent and 78.23 per cent, respectively.
 
Exports to Vietnam increased to 512,528 from 337,936 tonnes a year ago, while those to Japan rose to 341,355 tonnes from 191,524 tonnes. The east and south east Asian countries remained the main exports markets for the country.
 
In January, the exports were 724,526 tonnes against 535,756 tonnes during the same period last year, recording a growth of 35.23 per cent.
 
However, total exports in April-January was down to 27,40,976 tonnes against 31,70,434 tonnes during the same period last year, indicating a decline of 13.55 per cent over the last year.
 
SOPA has clarified that the data was collected and compiled based on information received from members, port authorities and other agencies. The data does not include exports to Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh by rail or road.
